Wallace State holds on to win Jim Redgate Invitational

(MERIDIAN) – Wallace State Community College held a four shot lead over Meridian Community College heading into Tuesday’s final round at the Jim Redgate Invitational played at Briarwood Country Club.

The Lions from Hanceville, Ala. posted a 293 team score on Tuesday which was good enough to hold on for the win. Wallace State held off a charging Central Alabama squad who posted the day’s lowest round, an even-par team score of 288. MCC matched Wallace State’s 293 on the final day and failed to make up any ground despite playing on their home course.

Wallace State finished with a 875 (+11) to win their first title of the season, while Central Alabama claimed consecutive runner-up finishes to start the 2010 season with an 877 (+13) just two shots back of Wallace State. Meridian finished in third place with an 879 (+15), four strokes back of the champions. Darton College out of Georgia claimed fourth place with an 887 (+23), while Rend Lake College of Illinois rounded out the top five with a 904 (+40).

“We struggled down the stretch on Tuesday, probably pressing too much to force birdies on some holes we shouldn’t have,” said MCC head coach Sean Covich.

“But what really cost us this tournament wasn’t what happened on the final day, it was the opening round of 301 which is 12 shots higher than our average score.”

Individually for MCC, sophomore Adam Monsen, who was on MCC’s B team, led the Eagles in scoring.

Monsen shot even par for the 54-hole event, shooting rounds of 72, 76, and a career low 4-under par 68 on the final day to register a top five individual finish. Monsen was also named to the all tournament team.

“If Adam would have been in the starting line-up obviously things would have been different, but its great to see him improving and he’s earned a start in our next match for sure,” added Covich.

For MCC’ A team, sophomore Clemens Dvorak led the way shooting 2-over for the tournament with rounds of 77, 71, and 70. Dvorak finished in sixth place.

Meridian freshman Easton Key finished in a tie for seventh place as he posted a 3-over tournament total with rounds of 72, 72, and 75.

Jake Striling, also a freshman, shot 3-over with rounds of 76, 70, and 73 and was in a four way tie for seventh place.

Sophomore Brandt Garon shot 7-over for the event with 76, 72, and 75 to finish in a tie for 12th place.

Joining Monsen on MCC’s B team was freshman Alex Grannon who finished in a tie for 19th place with an 11-over par total. Grannon shot 75, 76, and 76.

Sophomore Oscar Mariscal carded a 16-over total after rounds of 84, 75, and 73. Mariscal tournament was highlighted by a hole in one on the 205 yard par 3 third hole, the first hole in one of his career. Mariscal finished in a tie for 31st place.

Rounding our MCC’s scoring was freshman Ruston Smith who posted 19-ver par for the tournament with rounds of 83, 72, and 79.

Central Alabama sophomore Paul Harris won the medalist title with an 8-under par performance. Harris won by seven shots after rounds of 69, 68, and 71.

No. 1 Eagles set to host Jim Redgate at Briarwood

GolfStat.com NJCAA Div I Men’s Golf rankings

(MERIDIAN) – The latest national ranking by GolfStat.com was released this week and the Meridian Community College golf team found themselves atop the NJCAA poll for the first time in school history. MCC is ranked No.1 in the NJCAA Division I poll while fellow Distinct rival- Central Alabama is right behind the Eagles at No. 2.

“The No. 1 ranking is pretty neat but its only one month into the season,” said fifth year head coach Sean Covich.

“It ‘s something we’ve been working for since our move to Division I in the NJCAA (2008), but its where you are at the end of the season that matters.”

The No. 1 ranked Eagles are coming off a record setting performance last week as MCC shot a school record -14 under par (274) in round two of the Wallace State Invitational en route to a season opening victory. MCC sophomore, Brandt Garon, continued his winning steak as he defended his title in Cullman, AL with a 54-hoe total of -8 under par (67-70-71). Garon has now won two straight events, the NJCAA Div. I National Championship and the Wallace State Invitational).

MCC returns to competition on Monday when they host the Jim Redgate Invitational at Briarwood Country Club. The 54-hole event will feature 10 teams playing 36-holes on Monday and a final 18 holes on Tuesday. The format for the event will be five players competing for each school and counting the lowest four scores turned in after each round.

Three other ranked teams will join No. 1 MCC in the field this week as No. 2 Central Alabama, No. 4 Wallace State and No. 14 Faulkner State travel to Briarwood. Other teams scheduled to participate include three time national champion- Darton College out of Georgia, in-state rivals-East Central and Mississippi Gulf Coast, along with Rend Lake College of Illinois and the University of Mobile from Alabama.

“This is one of the strongest fields in all of junior college golf,” said Covich.

“There are over ten national championships represented by theses teams, and a lot of these guys will go on to play NCAA golf. I encourage folks to come out and watch because a few of these players have already signed with NCAA teams.”

Highlighting the MCC starting line-up this week will be defending NJCAA national champion Brandt Garon who finished tied for second in last season’s Jim Redgate Invitational. Garon will join former Lamar High School standout Easton Key in the Eagle line-up. Key, a freshman from Meridian, shot a school record 65 (-7) in the second round of the Wallace State Invitational.

MCC’s Fall Invitational is named after longtime founding father of MCC golf, Coach Jim Redgate who started coaching MCC golf and basketball back in 1971. He led the Eagles to the first MACJC State Championship in any sport (golf) back in 1972 and went on to win three-straight state titles in the 1970’s as head golf coach.

“We’re honored to have two Hall of Fame coaches in our proud golf history,” said Covich.

“Both our Fall Invitational and Spring Invitational are named in honor of our two great coaches- Jim Redgate and Lou Hart.”

MCC won last years Jim Redgate Invitational by two strokes over Central Alabama. Wallace State freshman Blaise Wilson won the 2009 medalist title with a 5-under par total using rounds of 70-69-69 and looks to defend his title this year as a sophomore.

MCC Women Nip Jones In JUCO Soccer Battle

(MERIDIAN, Miss.) - It’s been one big week for Meridian Community College sophomore Anastasia Vogel, and the hits just keep on coming.

Just named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) soccer player of the week, Vogel followed that honor by kicking in the winning goal with 4 minutes left on the clock in a 4-3 victory over the Jones Junior College Lady Bobcats Thursday evening at C.D. Smith Field.

In a matchup of regional powers in which the teams battled intense heat as much as one another, Coach Alex George’s Lady Eagles raised their record to 5-0-1 on the season. But it wasn’t easy as the Lady Bobcats rallied from deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 before Vogel finally booted in the deciding goal.

For the match, Vogel, a native of Pontotoc, Miss., scored three goals and was supported by another sophomore teammate, Kelsey Edwards, who recorded a goal and an assist. Samantha Smith also chalked up an assist for MCC.

“We looked upon this match as a gateway to the regional tournament,” George said.

“What our fans witnessed today (Thursday) was a possible preview of the Region 23 finals. Of course, we have a long, long way to go before we get to that point, but that’s the kind of team Jones has in my opinion. I think they are one of the top two or three teams in the state, and they showed that by coming in here and playing a highly competitive match.”

George called the match “a battle of wills” because of the heat.

“It was tough on both teams,” he assessed. “It’s still early in the season, and, quite honestly, we’re not as fit as hopefully we will become as the season progresses. However, our team raised its level of play when it had to, and I was very proud of them for that."

In the first half, it appeared the Lady Eagles might be able to put things on cruise control. Off Smith’s assist, Vogel knocked in the first goal at about the 26 minute mark. Edwards upped the ante to 2-0 with 8 minutes remaining in the half, and MCC went on to hold Jones scoreless in the first period.

But Jones came roaring back, scoring two goals in the first 5:01 of the second half, the first of which came on a perfectly executed corner kick finished off with a header goal.

Vogel regained the lead for the Lady Eagles with 25 minutes left at 3-2 off an assist by Edwards, only to see JCJC rally once again, tying the contest at 3-3 with 10 minutes left. Vogel’s game winner came 6 minutes later.

“I can’t say enough about Anastasia,” George said. “She’s a playmaker. She just makes things happen.”

George said his team still had some things to shore up in order to have a good shot at defending its Region 23 title.

“We played a bit loose on some corner kicks and gave up some goals that we normally wouldn’t,” he explained. “We’ve simply got to maintain our focus in order to reach our optimum potential as a team.”

The Lady Eagles’ next opportunity to test that focus will be Sept. 28 at Hinds CC. The women will play at 5 p.m. to be followed by the men’s contest in the nightcap at 7.

“Hinds will be another very tough opponent,” George said. “We’ll prepare hard and hopefully be ready when we go to Raymond.”

Coach Dolores Deasley’s Jones team fell to 4-2-1 with the loss. The Lady Bobcats will next host Co-Lin in a MACJC South Division tilt at 2 p.m. Saturday in Ellisville.

Eagle Cup IX: Freshmen start a new streak

(MERIDIAN) – Clear skies and a near perfect golf course greeted the competitors on Wednesday, the final day, of Eagle Cup IX played at historic Northwood Country Club. The Freshmen team came into the singles matches clinging to a 2 point lead (4-2) over the Sophomores.

Six points were up for grabs on the final day as the format turned to match play (singles).

Match #1 featured MCC Alumni Clinton Hales, representing the freshmen team against MCC Golf Team Chaplian Tom Sikes, who played for the sophomore team. Hales took an early lead and never let go, although Sikes got it to 1 near the turn, Hales put it away on the back nine winning 6&5 and earning the Freshmen team their 5th point, leaving them just 1 ½ points away from back-to-back Eagle Cups

Match #2 featured reigning NJCAA National Champion, Brandt Garon of the sophomore team against, hometown hero Easton Key of the freshmen team. Billed as the title bout match of the day, these two heavyweights went the distance as Key fought back from a deficit on the front nine to force the match to the full 18 holes. But the veteran Garon prevailed on #18 and won a much needed point for the sophomore team with a 2 UP victory over Key. The Eagle Cup then stood at 5-3.

Match #3 pitted Australian freshman golfer Jake Stirling against Texas sophomore Adam Monsen. Monsen grabbed a very early lead but Stirling slowly gained control of the match and eventually put it away with a 5&3 vicotry over Monsen earning the freshmen team the magical 6th point to guarantee at least a playoff and leaving them just ½ a point away from claiming the Cup.

Three matches were left on the course that would decide the Eagle Cup. The sophomores needed to win all three outright to force a playoff while the freshmen needed to just half one of the three to claim the Cup.

Match #4 featured freshmen Alex Grannon against sophomore Bo Reed. Reed obtained an early lead on the front nine and held on to it all the way to the 16th green where a drained birdie putt gave him a 3&2 victory and earned the sophomores a must-have point to stay alive and made the Eagle Cup 6-4.

Match #6 featured Clemens Dvorak of the sophomores against Ruston Smith of the freshmen team. Smith mounted a surprising 2 UP lead early through 8 holes but Dvorak, the teams captain and returning NJCAA National Tournament participant, rallied back on the back nine to win 3&2 and kept the sophomore comeback alive as the Cup now stood 6-5.

There was only one match left on the golf course and the drama was building as the gallery formed on the 17th hole to watch Match #5, Daniel Boles of the freshmen team against sophomore Oscar Mariscal.

Boles, who was at one point 4 Up on Mariscal midway in the round was now fighting off a hard charging and determined Mariscal. Oscar won most of the back side to make the match All Square going into #17. Both players made par on #17 and the Eagle Cup would be decided on the final hole as the gallery swelled with excitement. A win by Mariscal and there would be a playoff for the cup, a half or better by Boles would mean a record second consecutive Cup for the Freshmen. Both players drove the ball in less than perfect spot of the tee into the left rough but Boles was in the better of the two spots with an open pitch to the green, meanwhile Mariscal was left with what on on-looker described as “nothing.” The Bolivian Bandit then hit a punch-chip the likes of which had never been seen from that spot to about 5 feet away for birdie and sent the crowd into a loud applause, so much so that Bole had to step back before his shot. But the former MCC and Miss. St. golfer answered the call and chipped it to about 10 feet for birdie then made the put to seal the Cup for the Freshmen team as the Boles/Mariscal match ended All Square.

Eagle Cup IX ended with the Freshmen 6 ½ and the Sophomore 5 ½ . Eagle Cup X will be played this Spring 2011 in Meridian with the Freshmen riding a winning streak of their own now…

Freshmen continue to lead after Day Two

(MERIDIAN) - Once again Day Two of Eagle Cup IX featured perfect weather and clear skies as the format turned to the often times turbulent “alternate shot” match play as the Eagles ascended upon beautiful Briarwood Country Club Tuesday afternoon.

Heading into the day, the "Freshmen" team was looking to add to their 2-1 lead while the "Sophomore" team was looking to mount a comeback.

The first match of the day featured freshmen Alex Grannon and Ruston Smith against Brandt Garon and Tom Sikes.

Grannon/Smith grabbed an early lead for the freshmen team and extended it out to a 3 UP lead thru 15 but Garon/Sikes fought back to take the match to #17 only to lose the point. Grannon/Smith won 2&1, which extended the freshmen team’s lead out to 3-1.

The second match of the day saw Bo Reed and Adam Monsen team up for the sophomores against MCC Alumni golfers, Daniel Boles and Clinton Hales of the freshmen team.

Reed/Monsen dominated the match early as they had a 6 UP lead thru the front nine. On the backside the match looked to be over early, but Boles/Hales mounted a comeback and stretched the match out to the 16th holes, but Reed/Monsen eventually closed out the match 3&2. The sophomores earned a much needed point to make it 3-2, freshmen leading.

The final match of the day would pit freshmen Easton Key and Jake Stirling against sophomore Clemens Dvorak and Oscar Mariscal.

Key/Stirling cruised to a 5&4 victory over Dvorak/Mariscal as they closed out the match on Briarwood’s signature 14th hole giving the freshmen team a commanding 4-2 lead at the end of Day Two.

The final day of the three day Eagle Cup concludes Wednesday afternoon at Northwood Country Club. The final day will feature six different singles matches with a total of six points up for grabs. First team to 6 ½ points wins the Cup, meaning that the Freshmen earn just 2 ½ points to win their second consecutive Eagle Cup. Meanwhile the Sophomores need to win 4 ½ points to claim the cup for the first time since the Fall of 2009.
