MERIDIAN — The Meridian Community College Eagles couldn't have written the script any better on Friday afternoon at Scaggs Field. Ben Kingsley belted three home runs and MCC got two solid pitching performances to earn a much needed doubleheader sweep of Delgado Community College (8-3, 8-3) in local JUCO baseball Friday afternoon. Meridian entered its three game series with Delgado at 2-4 in the Miss-Lou Conference and the two victories have brought some life back into the Eagles.

Kingsley has hit six home runs in his last four games and leads the team with 17 home runs for the season. Kingsley came into the doubleheader against Delgado tied for the lead at 14 home runs in the nation, but has taken the lead with three long shots on Friday.

"Any time you can sweep a conference doubleheader and against such a good team is such a plus," said MCC head coach Chris Curry. "I thought that our starting pitchers today did a great job of answering the bell in such key starts today. We have some guys on our team that are starting to understand their role and we did a lot of things right in every part of both games."

Game 1
MCC 8
Delgado 3

The Eagles scored five runs in the fourth inning and held off a late Delgado rally to take the Game One victory over the Dolphins. MCC took a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning and the Eagles exploded for five runs to push its lead to 8-0. Delgado scored four runs in the sixth and eighth inning to avoid the sweep by Meridian to take an 11-6 victory over the Eagles in Miss-Lou Conference action.

Meridian is still alive for the regular season championship in the Miss-Lou Conference, but the Eagles will need a sweep of Baton Rouge on the road next weekend. The Bears currently sits at the top of the standings in the Miss-Lou Conference with a 6-3 record. All three teams in the Miss-Lou Conference will advance to the Region 23 Tournament at Delgado in three weeks no matter the result of the final series between Meridian and Baton Rouge next weekend.

"We just made too many mistakes that hurt us late in the game," said Meridian Community College head coach Chris Curry. "We have hurt ourselves numerous times this season with mistakes and we allowed them to happen again today. We still have a lot of big games ahead of us and postseason baseball is just around the corner."

The game resumed and Delgado put the game away for good with four more runs in the top of the eighth inning to make the score 10-4. According to Coach McPhail who is in her eleventh year as men’s and women’s tennis coach, “this has been an interesting year for Meridian tennis. The men’s team is one that I am the most proud of as six of the seven players are freshman. I have told them all season that we had to grow up mentally if we were going to keep the title in Meridian. I have a great group of guys and girls who have excelled all year on the courts and in the classroom as a whole. They have come together as a team, and I am extremely pleased with the determination and hard work I saw this week.

"The women had to overcome adversity as well early in the season when we lost our number three player at Christmas due to a should injury which resulted in surgery. As a coach, I had to completely rework my doubles who had played together in the fall. Doubles is like a marriage, “Players have to learn what the other one is doing to be a team,” so the girls had their work cut out for them. They have been a great group of ladies for two years as four of these ladies are sophomores.”

Corky Palmer, the coach who led Meridian Community College’s baseball program into national prominence, will be inducted Tuesday night into the Mississippi Junior College Sports Hall of Fame. The ceremony will be held at the Jackson-Hilton beginning at 7 p.m.

Each of Mississippi’s public community colleges select an inductee per year, and Palmer has been chosen as Meridian’s honoree for 2011. Palmer coached the MCC Eagles from 1987-96, compiling a record of 409-160, winning over 70 percent of his games. He is one of only two coaches in baseball history to lead both a junior college and a NCAA Division I team to their respective college world series. He accomplished the latter part of that distinction while head coach of the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.

“Coach Palmer is a legend in the annals of Mississippi college baseball,” said Dr. Scott Elliott, MCC president. “We are very excited about his induction into the Hall of Fame. He brought great honor to MCC as our baseball coach. His impressive record speaks for itself.”

Palmer will be joining in the Hall the following previous inductees from MCC: Lou Weddington Hart (golf); Cliff Lee, Jason Smith, Billy Harold Smith, and Paul Phillips (baseball); Jim Redgate (golf and basketball); and Ronald Murray (basketball).

At MCC, Palmer coached the Eagles to three trips to the Division I World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado, including a national runner-up finish in 1996. Palmer’s MCC Eagles captured five conference titles and four regional championships during his tenure. He was named Region 23 Coach of the Year on four occasions and NJCAA National Coach of the Year twice.

After departing MCC, Palmer became head coach at his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi, where he compiled a 458-281 record and led the Golden Eagles to eight NCAA Regionals, including seven in a row in his final seasons before retiring. His 2009 USM squad earned the university’s first-ever trip to the NCAA World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, by sweeping the University of Florida Gators in the NCAA super Regionals at Gainesville, FL.

Prior to entering the college coaching ranks, Palmer amassed a high school coaching record of 102-52. His 32-year career coaching mark at all levels stands at 969-493. A prolific high school and college player himself, Palmer was a three-year starter at catcher for USM under the legendary Pete Taylor and captained the Golden Eagles his senior year. Palmer is a member of the M-Club and Alumni Association Hall of Fames at USM as well as the 2011 Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame inductee class.

MCC golf starts postseason on Monday

Willow Point Golf & Country Club

The Meridian Community College golf team, currently ranked No. 3 in the country, will begin postseason play this week at the NJCAA District IV Championship.

The 54-hole event is being played on Monday and Tuesday at Willow Point Golf & Country Club in Alexander City, AL, and is being hosted by Central Alabama Community College. The Willow Point course measures a very long 7,465 yards and plays to a par 72.

12 teams from seven states are participating, with the top six advancing to Odessa, TX for the NJCAA Division I National Championship in May.

MCC moved up to Division I from Division II in the 2009 season and has finished third (2009) and second (2010) in their only two District IV appearances.

“We have improved every season since moving up to the highest level of NJCAA golf,” said head coach Sean Covich.

“This one will be a challenge. We are playing the No. 1 team (Central Alabama) on their home course for the District Championship, also we need to play solid to secure our spot in the national championship.”

The top three teams in the country are in District IV, they include No.1 Central Alabama, No. 2 Brevard (FL) College and No. 3 MCC. Wallace State (AL) Community College is also in the top ten, at No. 6.

“This is the hardest District to advance from, but if you can win in this league you can win a national championship.”

Defending NJCAA national champion, Brandt Garon, will start in the No. 1 spot for MCC. Garon won his fifth tournament last week as the sophomore defeated 102 players at the Arkansas State Red Wolf Intercollegiate, a NCAA Division I event. The Baton Rouge native shot 9-under par, 66-69 to win by two shots.

Freshman Jake Stirling looks to bounce back this week after a rough showing in Arkansas. The Melbourne, Australia native will start in the No. 2 spot. He has posted 13 rounds of even par or better this season and is tied with Garon for lowest stroke average on the team (72.6).

Sophomore team captain, Clemens Dvorak, will anchor the line-up in the No. 3 spot. Dvorak was recently named MCC’s Male Athlete of the Year, an award based on academic and athlete performance.

Freshman Easton Key, a former Lamar High School standout from Meridian will play in the No. 4 spot. Key shot an opening round 3-under par (69) last week in the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate. He shot the lowest round in school history, a 65 (-7) in the fall semester at the Wallace State Fall Invitational.

Rounding out the MCC line-up is sophomore Adam Monsen in the No. 5 spot. Monsen had another under-par preference last week, shooting 4-under (70-70) at the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate. He is a two-time medalist for MCC, winning the 2010 Faulkner State Invitational and the 2011 Mississippi-Louisiana College Invitational.

“This, right now, is our best line-up,” said Sean Covich.

“The key to postseason success is not only having talent but getting all five guys peaking at the right time, and I feel like we are.”

MCC will play 36-holes on Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday.

Wednesday

“Besides winning the national championship, which Brandt did last season, this is the biggest individual win by an Eagle,” said MCC head coach Sean Covich.

“Really proud to finish seventh and have these guys showcase their talents in front of all these four-year coaches.”

Individually for MCC, along with Garon’s 9-under, Adam Monsen shot 4-under and tied for eighth, former Lamar standout Easton Key shot 69-77 and tied for 30th, Alex Grannon shot 76-78 to tie for 81st, while Jake Stirling shot 81-78 to tie for 93rd.

MCC returns to action in the prestigious Red Wolf Intercollegiate

(MERIDIAN) - Fresh off their thrilling victory at the Lou Hart Invitational, the Meridian Community College golf team returns to action this Monday and Tuesday at the Arkansas State University Red Wolf Intercollegiate in Jonesboro, AR.

18 teams are participating in the 54-hole event being contested at Ridge Point Country Club. 17 of the 18 teams, including host Arkansas State, are NCAA Division I teams. MCC is the only junior college team invited to this event.

"This is the second year in a row that we've been invited and I think that says a lot about our program and our players," said fifth year head coach Sean Covich.

"It is a great opportunity not only to compete against NCAA teams but also for our players to be recruited for the next level."

Following last year’s ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate, then-MCC sophomore Cory Williamson signed with Arkansas State. Currently, Williamson is a starter for the Red Wolves.

This week the Eagles will start freshman, Jake Stirling, in the No. 1. The Melbourne, Australia native is ranked as the third best junior college golfer in the country, according to GolfStat.com. He leads the team with a 72.0 scoring average and has posted 13 rounds of even-par or better this season.

Defending NJCAA national champion, Brandt Garon, will play in the No. 2 spot. The sophomore from Baton Rouge has won four events during his Eagle career, including two this season. He has committed to play for the University of Louisiana-Lafayette next season.

Freshman Alex Grannon, from Kiln, MS, returns to the Eagle line-up this week in the No. 3 spot.

Sophomore Adam Monsen will start in the No. 4 for MCC. The San Antonio, TX native has won two tournaments during his time at MCC. He is scheduled to sign with the University of Louisiana-Monroe later this month.

Meridian native Easton Key will round out the Eagle line-up in the No. 5 spot. The freshman standout from Lamar has been battling kidney stones this past week, but made a dramatic putt to clinch the Lou Hart Invitational for MCC on Tuesday.

“Easton showed a lot of heart this week,” said MCC head coach Sean Covich.

“He fought though the pain to help us win at Northwood and he didn’t complain when he had to qualify this week. He stepped up and did what he had to do.”

“This tournament will be huge for the three freshmen (Grannon, Key, and Stirling). They can get their names out there and impress some of these NCAA DI coaches this week.”

This will be MCC's last regular season event before beginning NJCAA post-season action at the District IV championship April 18-19. The NJCAA Division I National Championship is slated for May 17-20 in Odessa, TX. The Eagles were runners-up in last season’s District IV and National championships.

MCC captures Lou Hart Invitational in sudden death playoff

from staff reports
The Meridian Star

MERIDIAN — Midway through his round on Tuesday, Meridian Community College freshman Easton Key was doubled over in pain suffering from kidney stones.

A few hours later his teammates shouted "Stones" — the new nickname they gave him for playing through the pain — after he sank a clutch 15-foot par putt in a sudden death team playoff on No. 1 at Northwood Country Club.

His putt — along with Freshman Jake Stirling's birdie and two other pars from teammates Brandt Garon and Adam Monsen in the playoff — helped the Eagles beat No. 1 ranked Central Alabama to win the Lou Hart Invitational.

In the sudden death playoff format, all 10 players from both teams played No. 1 at the same time. Key's dramatic par putt was followed by Stirling's 10-foot birdie putt. Stirling was the only player to make birdie in the sudden death playoff as MCC topped CACC by one stroke.

"This was a special win for us … it was the first time we've won the Lou Hart,” said MCC Coach Sean Covich. “The playoff was unbelievable, very dramatic. To beat the No. 1 ranked team in that fashion was a memory these guys will always have. I'm still not sure how we won, they (CACC) had 4 putts at birdie and we only had 2 but yet we won. Eagles collapse, swept in Miss-Lou opener

from staff reports

MERIDIAN — After getting shut out by rival Delgado in its Miss-Lou Conference opener on the road Saturday, Meridian Community College looked well on the way to revenge in Game 2. However, the Eagles collapsed after building a nine-run lead and fell 17-11 to get swept following the 5-0 loss in Game 1.

Scoring two runs in the first inning, three more in the second and six in the third, MCC (23-14, 0-2) led 11-2 following three frames. However, Delgado rallied for eight in the fourth and six in the fifth as they pulled away. Daniel Allen took the loss for MCC in relief of Dalton Short.

Ben Kingsley led the MCC offensive attack with three hits — two doubles and a triple — while Wade Wass, Hunter Trawick and Garrett Pitts all added two hits. Wass had two RBIs and a double, while Trawick doubled and drove in one and Pitts also had an RBI.

In the opener, Delgado scored four runs in the fourth to knock off former West Lauderdale star Dustin McWilliams, who fell to 3-4. The sophomore left-hander gave up four runs in just 3 1-3 innings. Another former Knight Dustin James had two of MCC's five hits as Meridian High product Kenny Roberts saw his 22-game hit streak snapped.
