Eagles collapse, swept in Miss-Lou opener
from staff reports
MERIDIAN — After getting shut out by rival Delgado in its Miss-Lou Conference opener on the road Saturday, Meridian Community College looked well on the way to revenge in Game 2. However, the Eagles collapsed after building a nine-run lead and fell 17-11 to get swept following the 5-0 loss in Game 1.
Scoring two runs in the first inning, three more in the second and six in the third, MCC (23-14, 0-2) led 11-2 following three frames. However, Delgado rallied for eight in the fourth and six in the fifth as they pulled away. Daniel Allen took the loss for MCC in relief of Dalton Short.
Ben Kingsley led the MCC offensive attack with three hits — two doubles and a triple — while Wade Wass, Hunter Trawick and Garrett Pitts all added two hits. Wass had two RBIs and a double, while Trawick doubled and drove in one and Pitts also had an RBI.
In the opener, Delgado scored four runs in the fourth to knock off former West Lauderdale star Dustin McWilliams, who fell to 3-4. The sophomore left-hander gave up four runs in just 3 1-3 innings. Another former Knight Dustin James had two of MCC's five hits as Meridian High product Kenny Roberts saw his 22-game hit streak snapped.
The Eagles will look to salvage a game in the three-game set as Wes Stokes takes the mound for the nine-inning game at 2 p.m. today.
