Freshmen Take Early Lead in Eagle Cup X

(MERIDIAN) - Sunny skies greeted the players on opening day of “Eagle Cup X” Monday at historic Northwood Country Club.

On Monday afternoon the “Sophomore” team, captained by Clemens Dvorak, faced off against the “Freshman” team, captained by Jake Stirling, in four ball match play with each match being played for one point. A total of three points were up for grabs on Day One.

The first match of the day featured Brandt Garon and Adam Monsen of the sophomore team against Easton Key and former MCC golfer Clinton Hales, who represented the freshmen team.

In what turned out to be the closest match of the day, Garon/Monsen closed out on the match on the final hole earning the sophomore team the first point of Eagle Cup X with a 1 UP victory over Key/Hales.

Match two featured sophomores Clemens Dvorak and Oscar Mariscal versus freshman Alex Grannon and Northwood Men’s club champion, John Rea.

Dvorak/Mariscal had the lead most of the front nine and into the backside before Grannon/Rea made clutch birdies to even the match. A close match all the way around the back nine, Grannon/Rea finally closed it out on the 17th hole to win 2&1. The Eagle Cup was now 1-1 with a victory for the freshmen team.

The final match of the day featured Bo Reed and former Eagle golfer Randy Warden on the sophomore team as they faced freshmen Jake Stirling and Josh Ellis

Reed/Warden got up early in the match, 2 UP after three holes only to see Stirling/Ellis battle back and regain the lead heading into the back nine. Stirling/Ellis put the match away with a par on the 16th hole to win 3&2 and thus giving the Freshmen Team a 2-1 advantage after Day One.

Day Two of the three day event continues Tuesday with alternate shot match play being held at Briarwood CC. Play beings at 2 PM with the freshmen leading 2-1.
