MCC Dominates MCC Relay Invitational

Meridian, MS – MCC hosted the third annual MCC Relay Invitational on Saturday on the campus of Meridian Community College.  MCC’s men’s squad did not disappoint in their only home meet of the season as the men won in commanding fashion winning eight events in the five team scored meet by scoring 98 points and beating 2nd place William Carey who finished with a total of 54 points. 

“Today was a great day for us across the board with several school and meet records and people qualifying for nationals,” said Head  Coach Chip Gayden.  “We love this meet and having the opportunity to run in front of our home crowd and to win the way we did was special.”

MCC started the day off in the jumps as Marrel Parker won the long jump with a mark of 7.02 meters.  R’darious Edwards finished fifth in the event with a mark of 6.63 meters.  In the triple jump Edwards soured to the win with a meet record jump of 14.40 meters.

On sprints side, MCC started the running events off in style as the men’s 4x100 meter relay of Daveon Rogers, Andre Burrell, Stephan Holcombe and Marcus Reaves cruise to a win with a time of 40.59.  Two event’s later Shakim Buckley notched a win in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.06.  

In the men’s 400 meters, MCC saw a one, two, four finish from the trio of Holcombe, James Burnett and Burrell.  Holcombe won the event in record fashion with a school record time and meet record time of 47.12 to edge out Burnett and Burrell who both finished in 47.45 and 49.03.
Marcus Reaves led the way in the 100 meters for MCC.  Reaves finished first in a time of 10.48  He was joined by Rogers who finished with a time of 10.78 to finish fourth.

In the distance events, MCC put on a show for the crowd.  MCC posted five of the top nine times in the event including a one, two finish.  Tim Hoodlebrink and Noah Smith led the way for MCC both finishing in NJCAA qualifying times of 1:53.98 and 1:54.76.  They were followed by fellow teammates Kobey Hill, who finished fourth in 1:55.84, Rogay Granston, who finished 6th in 1:55.91 and Micah Britton finished in 9th in 1:58.99 after finishing second in the 1500 meters earlier in the day.

MCC’s men’s team wrapped up the day in the 4x400 meter relay posting a meet record time of 3:11.82.  The foursome of Burnett, Granston, Holcombe and Hill finished three seconds ahead of second place in the event.

On the women’s side, MCC saw Ashley Henderson cruise to a win in the women’s 400 meters with a time of 57.40.  In the 100 hurdles Shaliyah Dixon-Tucker and Zaria Husband posted a one, two finish in the event with times of 14.72 and 14.81.

Next up for MCC is the South Alabama Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
