The Meridian Community College baseball team returned to
action at Scaggs Field on Tuesday afternoon by playing host to 16th ranked
Mississippi Delta Community College in a pair of key conference games. The
Eagles were able to come away with a pair of important victories over the
Trojans by final scores of 9-7 and 3-2. MCC improved to 17-11 overall and 6-6
in conference play with the sweep of Mississippi Delta. MCC has also won four
straight conference games and are right back in the middle of the race in
the MACJC. MCC will return to action this Saturday for yet another pair of
conference games as Pearl River Community College will make the trip to Scaggs
Field. The first pitch of the doubleheader between the two schools will begin
at 5 p.m.
MCC got the day started on Tuesday by battling from behind
to grab a 9-7 victory over Mississippi Delta in Game One of the scheduled twin
bill. MCC trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but third
baseman JD Gann quickly changed the fortunes of the home team. Gann blasted a
three-run home run over the center field wall that would give MCC a 6-4 lead in
the seventh inning. Chase Coker followed with a triple in the inning and came
around to score moments later to give the Eagles a 7-4 lead. Mississippi Delta
would add three runs in the top of the eighth inning to tie the score at 7-7,
but MCC would put the game away for good in the bottom of the inning. Gann
collected his fourth RBI of the game on a bases loaded walk and Coker drove in
the final run of the game on a fielder’s choice to pace MCC to the 9-7 Game One
victory.
MCC finished the opening game with 10 total hits and Coker
led the way with three hits and one run scored. Milton Smith also had three
singles and three runs scored in the two-run win, while former Northeast
Lauderdale star Landon Keller chipped in with a pair of singles. Logan McDowell
(3-0) picked up the pitching win in Game One out of the bullpen for MCC by
working two innings and collecting two strikeouts.
MCC finished off the sweep of Mississippi Delta in Game Two
behind a stellar pitching performance and timely hitting to grab a 3-2 victory.
The game was tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning and JD
Gann put the Eagles up for good on a sacrifice bunt that plated Milton Smith to
help MCC earn the one-run victory. Chase Coker also had a solo home run off the
scoreboard in the second inning and Zack Carter drove in one run in the contest
on a sacrifice fly.
Logan McDowell drew the start on the mound after earning the
Game One victory and pitched 4 1/3 innings and had nine strikeouts. Connor
Cosse got the win out of the bullpen for MCC by working 2 2/3 innings and
notching four strikeouts.
