MCC Tennis Tops JCJC

The Meridian Community College
men's and women's tennis teams picked up two wins yesterday against visiting
Jones County Junior College in matches held at Northeast Tennis Center in
Meridian.
Meridian's men took an 8-1
victory. In doubles, Jason Pimenta/Will Swindoll defeated Diego
Leal/Taqel Lewis 8-4, at two doubles, Callen Shinall/Breno Goncalves defeated
Chase Pennington/Brandon McCary 8-3, and at three doubles, John Taylor
Champion/Noah James won 8-6. In men's singles action, Pimenta cruised to
the win 6-1, 6-1 to win the one flight. At three singles, Will Swindoll
defeated Chase Pennington 6-1, 6-3; Callen Shinall won a close match at number
four singles by defeating Jacob Bozeman in a third-set tiebreak. The
score in Shinall's match was 6-4, 5-7, 10-6. At five singles, Noah James
took the first set over Luke Armstrong 6-2, 6-2. Will Irvin, at number
six defeated JCJC's Brandon McCary 6-3, 6-2. Meridian's only loss came at
two singles. Breno Goncalves fell to Diego Leal in a hard-fought match
6-4, 6-4. Meridian's men are now 12-3 with losses only to UWA, Eastern Florida,
and Millsaps. In MACJC action, MCC men are 7-0. Meridian will
travel to East Central Community College on Wednesday for a match beginning at
2:00. Meridian's men are ranked number 13 in the most recent ITA rankings
published March 16.
Meridian's women defeated Jones by
a score of 6-3. In women's doubles, Shelby Zachry/Jordyn Hull lost to
Beth Owen/Nastya Bukharar 8-6. The two doubles, Taylor Miller/Rachel
Sollie won 8-2; the three doubles team Kyra Holway/Micah Gray won 8-4. In
single's action, Beth Owen defeated Shelby Zachry 6-1, 6-2 at the one flight.
At two singles, Jordyn Hull lost to Bukharar 6-1, 6-2. At three
singles, Kyra Holway defeated April Rudolph 6-2, 6-4. At the four
singles, Taylor Miller defeated Kaylee McLaurin 6-2, 6-4. Rachel Sollie
won the five singles over Mattie Mills 6-3, 6-3. Micah Gray finished out
the singles at six with a win over August Parker 7-6(2), 6-4. Meridian's
women are 7-0 in MACJC play. Meridian women are 9-8 overall with losses
to the number 4, 7, 8, 14 and 19 ranked teams in the ITA national rankings
published March 16. Their other losses came at the hands of four-year
colleges. Meridian women will also return to action with a match at
Decatur at 2:00 pm on the East Central College campus. In the most recent
rankings, Meridian women are ranked number 20.
