MCC Tennis Completes Four-Day Round of Play

In most recent tennis action, MCC’s men and women traveled
to Alexander City, Al on Friday to play a doubleheader. Meridian’s women
played Central Alabama Community College in a women’s only match Friday
morning. Meridian fell to CACC earlier in the season 7-2 but were much
more competitive this match losing 5-4 with the final match coming down to a
10-8 tiebreak score.
Meridian lost both one and two lines of doubles; however,
Kyra Holway/Micah Gray won at three doubles 9-7. At number one singles,
Shelby Zachry took a big win over Ashley Coots in a three setter 2-6, 6-4,
10-4. Jordyn Hull lost at two singles to Maggie Blackwell 2, 4. At
three singles, Kyra Holway lost to Kallie Beall 7-6 (8), 2. Rachel Sollie
lost the four singles in a third-set tiebreak to Kacy Howard 2-6, 6-4,
10-8. Micah Gray, subbing in at five for Taylor Miller, won 6-2, 7-6(3)
over Abby Hayes. Katherine Mitchell won the six singles against Emily
Cheschier 3-6, 6-4, 10-7. In afternoon matches both teams fell to
ABAC. The women were defeated 9-0. ABAC’s women are currently
ranked number 5 in the nation. The men lost 8-1, but take pride in the
fact that the number one doubles duo of Jason Pimenta/Will Swindoll beat the
one doubles. ABAC’s men are ranked number four in the latest
rankings.
Saturday, April 1, MCC recognized eleven sophomores during
the pregame Sophomore Day Recognition Ceremony. It was a great day to be
an Eagle. This group of young men and women have represented MCC, this
community, and the tennis program in an admirable fashion. They are
leaders on our campus and have performed many hours of community Service.
The men’s team had a 3,66 GPA at the end of the first semester, and the women
had a 3.84. Sophomores recognized were John Taylor Champion, who is
headed for MSU; Nathan Hollis and Will Irvin, who will also be moving on to
MSU. Jason Pimenta, the number one singles player, is still undecided
about where the will play. Breno Goncalves, Shelby Zachry, and Kyra
Holway will continue their tennis careers at Delta State University. Noah
James is headed for Mississippi College to pursue a degree in medicine.
Hayden Hill is headed to MUW to pursue a nursing degree. Taylor Miller
and Jordyn Hull are still uncertain as to where they will go after MCC.
Both teams switched gears after the sophomore recognition to winning a tennis
match. The men defeated Hinds CC 8-1; the women came away with a 6-3
victory.
Meridian’s teams traveled to Jones Junior College on
Monday. Both teams came away with a 6-3 decision. Meridian’s women
won all three double’s courts and the 3, 4. And 6 singles. Meridian’s men
had no easy matches. They eased past Jones at all three doubles courts
and won number 1, 4 and 5 singles. Meridian will be in action again on
Friday as they travel to Gadsden and Boaz for matches. The teams travel to
Mississippi Gulf Coast at Perkinston on Saturday, April 8 to play MGCCC.
Meridian’s women are 14-7 on the season. In MACJC play they are 13-0 on
the season. Meridian’s men are 16-3 on the season and 13-0 in MACJC play.
