MCC Tennis Completes Four-Day Round of Play

From School Reports

In most recent tennis action, MCC’s men and women traveled to Alexander City, Al on Friday to play a doubleheader.  Meridian’s women played Central Alabama Community College in a women’s only match Friday morning.  Meridian fell to CACC earlier in the season 7-2 but were much more competitive this match losing 5-4 with the final match coming down to a 10-8 tiebreak score.

Meridian lost both one and two lines of doubles; however, Kyra Holway/Micah Gray won at three doubles 9-7.  At number one singles, Shelby Zachry took a big win over Ashley Coots in a three setter 2-6, 6-4, 10-4.  Jordyn Hull lost at two singles to Maggie Blackwell 2, 4.  At three singles, Kyra Holway lost to Kallie Beall 7-6 (8), 2.  Rachel Sollie lost the four singles in a third-set tiebreak to Kacy Howard 2-6, 6-4, 10-8.  Micah Gray, subbing in at five for Taylor Miller, won 6-2, 7-6(3) over Abby Hayes.  Katherine Mitchell won the six singles against Emily Cheschier 3-6, 6-4, 10-7.  In afternoon matches both teams fell to ABAC.  The women were defeated 9-0.  ABAC’s women are currently ranked number 5 in the nation.  The men lost 8-1, but take pride in the fact that the number one doubles duo of Jason Pimenta/Will Swindoll beat the one doubles.  ABAC’s men are ranked number four in the latest rankings.

Saturday, April 1, MCC recognized eleven sophomores during the pregame Sophomore Day Recognition Ceremony.  It was a great day to be an Eagle.  This group of young men and women have represented MCC, this community,  and the tennis program in an admirable fashion.  They are leaders on our campus and have performed many hours of community Service.  The men’s team had a 3,66 GPA at the end of the first semester, and the women had a 3.84.  Sophomores recognized were John Taylor Champion, who is headed for MSU; Nathan Hollis and Will Irvin, who will also be moving on to MSU.  Jason Pimenta, the number one singles player, is still undecided about where the will play.  Breno Goncalves, Shelby Zachry, and Kyra Holway will continue their tennis careers at Delta State University.  Noah James is headed for Mississippi College to pursue a degree in medicine.  Hayden Hill is headed to MUW to pursue a nursing degree.  Taylor Miller and Jordyn Hull are still uncertain as to where they will go after MCC.  Both teams switched gears after the sophomore recognition to winning a tennis match.  The men defeated Hinds CC 8-1; the women came away with a 6-3 victory.

Meridian’s teams traveled to Jones Junior College on Monday.  Both teams came away with a 6-3 decision.  Meridian’s women won all three double’s courts and the 3, 4. And 6 singles.  Meridian’s men had no easy matches.  They eased past Jones at all three doubles courts and won number 1, 4 and 5 singles.  Meridian will be in action again on Friday as they travel to Gadsden and Boaz for matches. The teams travel to Mississippi Gulf Coast at Perkinston on Saturday, April 8 to play MGCCC.  Meridian’s women are 14-7 on the season.  In MACJC play they are 13-0 on the season.  Meridian’s men are 16-3 on the season and 13-0 in MACJC play.
