MCC Baseball Splits Home Doubleheader

The Meridian Community College baseball team returned to
action on Saturday at Scaggs Field to continue its current eight-game home
stand against conference foe Pearl River Community College. The Eagles came
away with a doubleheader split against the Wildcats by winning Game One 14-4
and falling to PRCC in Game Two by a final count of 7-2. MCC is now 18-12
overall after the split on Saturday against the Wildcats and 7-7 in MACJC play
for the season. The Eagles will conclude its current –eight-game stretch of
home games on Tuesday (April 11) against Northeast Mississippi Community College
in another pair of conference games at Scaggs Field. The first pitch of the
twin bill on Tuesday between MCC and Northeast is scheduled for 3 p.m.
MCC banged out 17 hits against PRCC and got a solid pitching
performance from freshman hurler Hunter Stanley to win Game One on Saturday by
a final count of 14-4. Stanley pitched seven strong innings for the Eagles and
notched seven strikeouts in his stellar performance. Milton Smith led the
Eagles at the plate in Game One with three singles and two RBI’s, while Luke
Craig drove in four runs on a pair of hits in the victory. Former Northeast
Lauderdale star Landon Keller had a pair of hits and drove in a pair of runs
for MCC, while Trace Jordan knocked in three runs on two base hits. Freshman
catcher Garrett Busby also had a solid day at the plate in Game One for MCC
with three singles and one RBI.
MCC couldn’t carry over the offense into Game Two and fell
to the Wildcats by a final of 7-2. MCC finished Game Two with nine total hits
and Milton Smith led the way with a pair of singles. Landon Keller also
continued to swing a hot bat in Game Two with a pair of singles for the Eagles.
Zack Carter, Luke Craig, Blake Fields, and JD Gann each finished with one
double apiece in the setback for MCC.
Freshman pitcher Briar Russell suffered the loss on the
mound in Game Two for MCC by working three innings and striking out three.
