MCC Basketball Splits Home Set With Gulf Coast

The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles continued to play superb basketball in the second half of the 2013-2014 Thursday night at the Graham Gymnasium. The Lady Eagles used a solid inside game from freshman Miaya Crowder to dispose of Mississippi Gulf Coast by a final score of 81-75. Crowder finished the game with 25 points and was a force in the paint for most of the game for the Lady Eagles.

The victory keeps the Lady Eagles right in the thick of the race for the MACJC South Division crown. MCC improves to 13-2 overall for the season and 5-1 inside South Division play. MCC entered Thursday night in a four-way tie for first place with Jones, Pearl River, and Southwest. Pearl River defeated Jones in overtime Thursday night by a final of 89-83, while Southwest defeated East Central by a final score of 65-42.

MCC and Southwest are both tied for first place in the South Division after victories Thursday night, while Jones and Pearl River are now one game back of the two top teams in the division race. MCC will open a huge three-game road trip that begins Tuesday with its biggest matchup to date, as the Lady Eagles will travel to Southwest. MCC will close out its three-game trip with games at East Central and Hinds. MCC and Southwest will take to the floor beginning at 5:30 Tuesday evening.

Sophomore guard Kristen Sampson had another solid performance for Meridian by scoring 25 points, while former Neshoba Central star Victoria Stewart finished the game with 15 points.

The MCC men were looking to carry over its momentum from a dramatic 71-70 victory over Pearl River Tuesday night, but the visiting Bulldogs were just too much to handle for the Eagles. Mississippi Gulf Coast earned an 86-69 victory over MCC to give the visitors a road split for the night.

MCC was led in scoring by Corey Brister with 12 points, while Donald King added 10 points in the setback for the Eagles. The MCC men are now 2-12 overall for the season and 1-5 in South Division play.

The MCC men will now hit the road for its next three games and its next scheduled game is Tuesday night at Southwest. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

MCC Sweeps Past PRCC

The Meridian Community College men’s basketball team has endured a very difficult 2013-2014 season and the squad entered its MACJC South Division game against Pearl River Community College looking to reverse its fortunes. The Eagles had lost seven straight games and was winless in South Division play as it welcomed the Wildcats to Jim Redgate Court Tuesday night. The struggles for team have been evident all season with a dismal 1-11 record, but all of the fans had a reason to smile as they left the warm Graham Gymnasium to exit into the cold Mississippi night.

Sophomore guard Corey Brister drained a three-point basket as time expired to send the Eagles into the win column with a 71-70 victory over Pearl River. MCC trailed PRCC 70-68 with just ten second remaining on the clock and MCC drove the length of the floor to try and set things up for the final shot. The Eagles were able to move the ball around to Brister in the far right corner with just under a second remaining in the game. Brister put the final shot of the game up in the air and the prayer was answered for the Eagles to defeat the Wildcats 71-70.

Brister finished the game with a team-high 22 points and 18 of his points came from beyond the three-point line. Brandon Daniels scored 14 points in the victory for MCC, while former Meridian High star William Byrd added 10 points.

MCC (2-11, 1-4) will return to action Thursday night at home against Mississippi Gulf Coast beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The Lady Eagles also had plenty to smile about Thursday night as it disposed of Pearl River by a final score of 71-43. Miaya Crowder dominated the night for the Lady Eagles with 22 points and seven rebounds. Victoria Stewart scored 13 points in the win, Kristen Sampson added 10 points.

The MCC women improved to 12-2 and 4-1 in South Division play with the victory. The Lady Eagles will play again Thursday night at home against Mississippi Gulf Coast at 5:30 p.m.

MCC Basketball Splits South Division Set With Co-Lin

The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles bounced back from its disappointing road loss at Jones Monday evening to secure a 76-66 victory over the Lady Wolves of Co-Lin Thursday night at the Graham Gymnasium. The Lady Eagles improved to 11-2 overall with the victory and 3-1 in MACJC South Division play, while Co-Lin dropped its overall record to 7-6 and 0-4 in league play.

The MCC men were not as fortunate as Co-Lin held on for a 68-62 victory over the Eagles. Co-Lin improved to 6-7 overall for the 2013-2014 and 2-2 in South Division play, while MCC fell to 1-11 overall and 0-4 in league play.

Both the MCC women and men will return to Jim Redgate Court at the Graham Gymnasium Tuesday night in a key South Division doubleheader against Pearl River Community College. The women will take to the floor at 5:30 and the men at 7:30.

MCC Drops Road Set At JCJC

The Meridian Community Lady Eagles saw its six-game winning streak come crashing down on the road Monday night as Jones Junior College defeated MCC by a final score of 92-64.

Kristin Sampson led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 23 points, while Victoria Stewart added 17 points.

MCC dropped its overall record to 10-2 for the 2013-2014 season and 2-1 in MACJC South Division play. Jones moved its overall record to 8-4 for the season and 2-1 in South Division play.

The MCC men also fell Monday night at the hands of the Bobcats by a final score of 94-70. The Eagles dropped its overall record to 1-10 for the season and 0-3 in South Division play. JCJC is now 11-1 overall for the season and 3-1 in league play.

MCC will look to bounce back with a home doubleheader Thursday night against Co-Lin. The women will take to the floor at 5:30 followed by the men's game at 7:30.
