MCC Sweeps Past PRCC
From School Reports
The Meridian Community College men’s basketball team has
endured a very difficult 2013-2014 season and the squad entered its MACJC South
Division game against Pearl River Community College looking to reverse its
fortunes. The Eagles had lost seven straight games and was winless in South Division
play as it welcomed the Wildcats to Jim Redgate Court Tuesday night. The
struggles for team have been evident all season with a dismal 1-11 record, but
all of the fans had a reason to smile as they left the warm Graham Gymnasium to
exit into the cold Mississippi night.
Sophomore guard Corey Brister drained a three-point basket
as time expired to send the Eagles into the win column with a 71-70 victory
over Pearl River. MCC trailed PRCC 70-68 with just ten second remaining on the
clock and MCC drove the length of the floor to try and set things up for the
final shot. The Eagles were able to move the ball around to Brister in the far
right corner with just under a second remaining in the game. Brister put the
final shot of the game up in the air and the prayer was answered for the Eagles
to defeat the Wildcats 71-70.
Brister finished the game with a team-high 22 points and 18
of his points came from beyond the three-point line. Brandon Daniels scored 14
points in the victory for MCC, while former Meridian High star William Byrd
added 10 points.
MCC (2-11, 1-4) will return to action Thursday night at home
against Mississippi Gulf Coast beginning at 7:30 p.m.
The Lady Eagles also had plenty to smile about Thursday
night as it disposed of Pearl River by a final score of 71-43. Miaya Crowder
dominated the night for the Lady Eagles with 22 points and seven rebounds.
Victoria Stewart scored 13 points in the win, Kristen Sampson added 10 points.
The MCC women improved to 12-2 and 4-1 in South Division
play with the victory. The Lady Eagles will play again Thursday night at home
against Mississippi Gulf Coast at 5:30 p.m.
