Freshmen continue to lead after Day Two

(MERIDIAN) - Once again Day Two of Eagle Cup IX featured perfect weather and clear skies as the format turned to the often times turbulent “alternate shot” match play as the Eagles ascended upon beautiful Briarwood Country Club Tuesday afternoon.

Heading into the day, the "Freshmen" team was looking to add to their 2-1 lead while the "Sophomore" team was looking to mount a comeback.

The first match of the day featured freshmen Alex Grannon and Ruston Smith against Brandt Garon and Tom Sikes.

Grannon/Smith grabbed an early lead for the freshmen team and extended it out to a 3 UP lead thru 15 but Garon/Sikes fought back to take the match to #17 only to lose the point. Grannon/Smith won 2&1, which extended the freshmen team’s lead out to 3-1.

The second match of the day saw Bo Reed and Adam Monsen team up for the sophomores against MCC Alumni golfers, Daniel Boles and Clinton Hales of the freshmen team.

Reed/Monsen dominated the match early as they had a 6 UP lead thru the front nine. On the backside the match looked to be over early, but Boles/Hales mounted a comeback and stretched the match out to the 16th holes, but Reed/Monsen eventually closed out the match 3&2. The sophomores earned a much needed point to make it 3-2, freshmen leading.

The final match of the day would pit freshmen Easton Key and Jake Stirling against sophomore Clemens Dvorak and Oscar Mariscal.

Key/Stirling cruised to a 5&4 victory over Dvorak/Mariscal as they closed out the match on Briarwood’s signature 14th hole giving the freshmen team a commanding 4-2 lead at the end of Day Two.

The final day of the three day Eagle Cup concludes Wednesday afternoon at Northwood Country Club. The final day will feature six different singles matches with a total of six points up for grabs. First team to 6 ½ points wins the Cup, meaning that the Freshmen earn just 2 ½ points to win their second consecutive Eagle Cup. Meanwhile the Sophomores need to win 4 ½ points to claim the cup for the first time since the Fall of 2009.
