Eagles open season at Wallace State


(CULLMAN) - The 2010 NJCAA individual national champion, Brandt Garon, will make his sophomore season debut for the Meridian Community College golf team Monday at the Wallace State Fall Invitational played in Cullman, AL.

The Baton Rouge, La. native set six school records en route to claiming the program's first individual national title his freshman season as he helped lead MCC to their highest national finish- runners-up at the Division I Junior College Championship. Garon was named the Arnold Palmer Award recipient by the Golf Coaches Association of America, as well as to the GCAA All Freshman team and selected First Team GCAA/NJCAA All America.

Garon will lead the Eagles this week at Wallace State as he is looking to defend his 2009 title at the Cullman Golf Club. Last season he defeated Ole Miss signee, Zach Primavera by two strokes to win as Garon, then a freshman for MCC, shot 68-71-66 last fall to win in his first college event.

Meridian native and former Lamar standout, Easton Key, will make his first career start for the Eagles this week. Key will be joined by team captain and sophomore- Clemens Dvorak, along with two players making their first career starts- Oscar Mariscal and Jake Stirling.

The 54-hole event will get underway Monday with 36 holes and wrap up Tuesday with the final 18 holes. Some teams scheduled to appear are host-Wallace State, Central Alabama, Faulkner State, East Central, Meridian and others.
