MCC basketball ready to tip-off '07-'08 season

(MERIDIAN) - The Meridian Community College basketball teams are set to begin their 2007-2008 season this Saturday in the Graham Gymnasium. The Eagles' open up a 25-game season slate with a home contest versus Delgado (LA) Community College.

The Delgado game will begin a three game home stand for the Eagles as MCC will host Wallace-Selma (AL) Community College on Wednesday, Nov 7th and Marion (AL) Military Institute on Saturday, Nov 10th following their season opener on Nov 3rd.

Head Coach George Books and his men’s squad will take on an entirely new look this season as MCC will boast 11 new players (10 freshman, 1 sophomore transfer).

Meanwhile, for the women’s team, Coach Hilary Allen will return three key members from last year’s squad that made it all the way to the NJCAA Region 23 championship game. The Lady Eagles will be headlined by returning All-Region 23 sophomore NaDasha Strickland, along with fellow sophomores Jennifer Wair and Zerconia Hopkins from last year's 17-11 squad.

Last year the Lady Eagles defeated Delgado 73-52, the men’s team did not play.

The Lady Eagles take to the court at 3:00 PM Saturday, while the men follow at 5:00 PM.

Lady Eagles prepare to host Region Championship

(Meridian) - Following the programs first ever MACJC State Championship, the Meridian Community College Lady Eagle soccer team is preparing to host the NJCAA Region 23 women’s soccer tournament this weekend.

The Region 23 women’s soccer tournament will feature four teams from Louisiana and Mississippi. The tournament gets underway Friday at 4:00 p.m. when Mississippi Gulf Coast takes on Bossier-Parrish out of Louisiana in the tournaments first match.

The Lady Eagles of Meridian will take to the field at 6:00 p.m. when they face Hinds Community College.

“I would like to invite everyone who can to come out and join us,” said head coach Alex George.

“This is a big step for the girls and our program.”

The two teams that advance from Friday will play at 2:00 p.m. Saturday for the Region 23 championship.

Region winner will advance one step closer to the NJCAA national championship tournament when they play in the District Championship.

If MCC wins the Region they will host District next Saturday.

MCC Golf claims top 5, Moulds All Tournament in Destin, FL

(Destin, Fla.) - The Meridian Community College golf team finished the Indian Bayou Collegiate Classic in a tie for 5th place with a team score of 302.

The University of North Alabama-hosted event featured 17 collegiate golf teams of which 15 were four-year NCAA teams. MCC and J.A. Logan College were the two NJCAA teams invited.

The Eagles were led by freshman Jarrod Moulds who fired a 1-under par round of 71.

Moulds, a former Lamar School standout, finished tied for 4th out of 85 golfers. He was named to his first career all-tournament team.

MCC sophomore Joshua Ivy used a rare double eagle (2) on the par five finishing hole to shoot a 3-over par 75.

MCC freshman Joe Konieczny and sophomore Bryant Self both shot rounds of 6-over par 78.

MCC freshman Clay Bounds shot 8-over par 80.

For the second consecutive year, Columbus State (GA) University won the event with a team score of 293. Arkansas Tech University claimed team runner-up with a 295.

Patrick Wilson of Lander University was medalist with a 3-under par, 69.

The Eagles will return to action November 5-6 at the University of Mobile Fall Classic played at Azalea City Golf Course in Mobile, AL.

MCC Golf deals with weather delay

(DESTIN, FL.) – The Meridian Community College golf team was scheduled to return to competition Monday at the Indian Bayou Colligate Classic in Destin, FL, however Mother Nature had other plans.

The tournament, hosted by the University of North Alabama, was slated for 36 holes, but with a complete rain out of the first round, the tournament will be shortened (weather permitting) to just 18 holes on Tuesday.

The Eagles are coming off a three consecutive top-three team finishes at the NW Shoals Invitational (3rd), the J.A. Logan Invitational (3rd) and the MCC/Rush Fall Invitational (2nd).

MCC’s line up for the event feature sophomores Joshua Ivy and Bryant Self along with freshmen Clay Bounds, Joe Konieczny and Jarrod Moulds.

Indian Bayou Golf Course plays to a par-72 and spans over 7,078 yards.

“This is an opportunity for our guys to gain experience and compete against some major university programs,” said MCC head golf coach, Sean Covich.

“I just hope that the weather clears up and allows us to play.”

Lady Eagles win MACJC State Championship

(RAYMOND, Miss) - It was a banner year for the Meridian Community College Lady Eagle soccer team in 2007 and now they have a banner to wave, the programs first MACJC State Championship.

MCC faced Gulf Coast in the finals of the MACJC Womens soccer State Championship Sunday afternoon on the campus of Hinds Community College.

Lady Eagle freshman Kari Leiberman scored first to give MCC a 1-0 halftime lead.

Gulf Coast tied it up in the second half at 1-1.

MCC's star freshman, Holly Head, scored two goals in the final half to secure the biggest win in the programs history.

MCC defeated Gulf Coast 3-1.

As the State Champions, MCC will advance to play in the Region 23 tournament with a chance to go to the NJCAA national championship tournament.

MCC men defeated in a shootout

(RAYMOND, Miss) - The Meridian Community College men's soccer team faced a tall challenge in playing the No. 1 team from the North Division, home standing Hinds Community College in the semifinal game of the MACJC State soccer tournament Saturday night.

Hinds had defeated the Eagles soundly back in September at Meridian's Rush Classic, 6-0 making a victory for MCC in this playoff game seemingly even more difficult.

Matt Clifton scored the first goal of the game and put MCC up 1-0 early but a Hinds goal late in the first half made it 1-1 at halftime.

The second half remained scoreless and for the second time in one day, MCC head coach Alex George coached MCC in overtime with the season on the line.

Earlier in the day MCC's women won their game in overtime to advance into the championship game and the Eagles were trying to join them.

Things got more intense when neither team scored in overtime and the game was sent into a shootout.

With a MACJC State Championship game appearance on the line, MCC missed their first shot and made every other shot after, but Hinds was perfect and defeated MCC 6-5 in the shootout to advance into the championship game and end MCC's season.

"I am proud of this team," said George.

"This was one of the most intense games I've ever seen, its a shame either team had to lose."

Lady Eagles advance into championship game

(RAYMOND, Miss) - For the first time in the programs history the Meridian Community College Lady Eagle soccer team played in a post season game in the MACJC State soccer tournament at Hinds Community College.

As the South Division champions, MCC faced the No. 2 North Division seed, Itawamba Community College Saturday afternoon in the semifinal game.

Lady Eagles McKenzie Butler and Holly Head have combined to lead MCC's scoring attack all season and in the match vs. ICC it was no different.

Butler, a sophomore from Pontotoc, scored a goal in the first half to make it 1-1, the game remained tied until the first the end of regulation.

In the extra period of play, Head, a freshman from Vicksburg, scored for the Lady Eagles to send MCC into the MACJC State Championship for the first time in the programs history.

MCC will face the winner of the Gulf Coast/Hinds game for the state championship Sunday afternoon.

MCC Golf in action at Indian Bayou Classic in Destin, FL

MCC Soccer preps for State Championship

(RAYMOND, MS) – The Meridian Community College soccer teams had their final practice Friday afternoon at the Hinds Community College soccer field in preparation for the 2007 MACJC State soccer tournament.

After securing the 2007 MACJC South Division championship Wednesday night with a 3-1 victory over Copiah Lincoln Community College the MCC Lady Eagles will play in the programs first-ever postseason game Saturday.

“We had a great run this season,” said MCC soccer coach Alex George.

“The sophomores like McKenzie Butler and Jasmine Harris provided leadership and our freshmen group like Holly Head and Kari Lieberman have been great for us this year.”

The Lady Eagles finished the year 13-1-2 (10-1-1) and have not lost a game since August 31 (3-4 loss v. Pear River).

MCC will face Itawamba Community College, the No. 2 seed from the North Division, at noon Saturday.

“We’re real excited about our match up with Itawamba we faced them a few weeks ago and it was a battle then so I expect an exciting game,” said George.

Winner of the MCC/Itawamba game will face the winner of the Hinds/Gulf Coast game on Sunday at 4 pm for the MACJC State Championship.

MCC’s men earned a spot in the playoffs by defeating Co-Lin 4-0 Wednesday night. The Eagles will be the No. 2 seed from the South Division and will face the No.1 team from the north, Hinds Community College.

Hinds defeated MCC back on September 28 in the Rush Classic.

“They (Hinds) use an aerial attack and try to get their best player (Michael Cooper) in an isolation situation with one of our defenders,” said George.

“We’ve looked at game film and have made adjustments so we’ll see if those payoff.”

The Eagles, who finished the regular season at 11-4-1 (10-1-1), will play Hinds at 6 pm on Saturday.

Winner of the MCC/Hinds game will face the winner of the Itawamba/Gulf Coast game for the MACJC State/NJCAA Region 23 Championship on Sunday at 6 pm.

MCC Soccer teams advance into MACJC Playoffs

The rain fell on and off throughout the evening but nothing could dampen the celebration for the Meridian Community College Lady Eagles soccer team as they made history Wednesday night.

MCC defeated Copiah Lincoln Community College 3-1 in front of a home crowd on “Sophomore Night” to claim the schools first ever MACJC South Division championship in women's soccer.

MCC head soccer coach, Alex George, has seen the Lady Eagles program grow since its inception in 2002. From their humble beginnings, the MCC women's soccer program has continued to take step after step looking for their first MACJC playoff birth. Wednesday night the Lady Eagles capped off their breakthrough season with not just a playoff spot but they did so by winning the 2007 MACJC South Division Championship.

“This is a big step for this program,” said George, after guiding his Lady Eagles into the State tournament for the first time.

"It’s been a cinderella story for these ladies, we're going to use this victory tonight as a springboard into the playoffs."

The Lady Eagles were led by McKenzie Butler, Jasmine Harris and Holly Head in the first half. All three Lady Eagles scored one goal a piece to give MCC a 3-0 lead at the half.

Co-Lin then scored their lone goal of the night midway in the second half to pull back in the game at 3-1 MCC.

The Lady Eagles then held Co-Lin scoreless the rest of the game on their way to the division crown.
The Lady Eagles improved to 13-1-2 (10-1-1) and will advance to play in the MACJC soccer tournament this weekend at Hinds Community College. MCC will face Itawamba Community College, the #2 seed from the North Division, Saturday at noon.

If the Lady Eagles win that game they will play for the MACJC State Championship Sunday afternoon.

While the Lady Eagles were celebrating their championship, MCC's men were fighting for the #2 South Division spot and a birth into the playoffs.

MCC needed a win against visiting Co-Lin to extend their year into the post season.

MCC sophomore Terry Silva virtually secured the Eagles a playoff spot by scoring a hat trick, 3 goals, in the first half to give the MCC a commanding 3-0 halftime lead.

Sophomore Matthew Louge added a goal in the second half to give MCC a 4-0 lead.

MCC shutout Co-Lin 4-0.

With the win the Eagles improved to 11-4-1 (9-2-1)and earned a spot in the MACJC State playoffs this weekend at Hinds Community College.

"This is big to have both teams in the playoffs," said George, who's MCC mens team will face Hinds Community College, the #1 seed from the North Division, Saturday at 6 pm.

"We've got a lot of momentum from our win tonight. Its a big opportunity facing Hinds in the opening round. We've seen them once already this year and we have learned from that game."

Winner of the Hinds/Meridian game will advance to play in the MACJC State Championship game on Sunday.

MCC Soccer Preps for final home game

Following a road contest with MACJC South Division foe- Mississippi Gulf Coast on Saturday in Perkinston, the Meridian Community College soccer teams are now focusing their attention to their final regular season contest versus division opponent, Copiah-Lincoln Community College on Wednesday night in Meridian.

With a win Wednesday on “Sophomore Night” versus Co-Lin, the Lady Ealges will make it official for the first time in the program's history, to not only make the playoffs but win the MACJC South Division Championship.

“We aren't looking over anyone,” said Head Coach Alex George.

“This team has everything it takes right now to win a championship. Most important, they show up and play for one another. That's what so special. No individuals on this team.”

The Lady Eagles are 12-1-2 overall and 9-1-1 in conference play.

The Eagles are currently sitting in second place after a tough overtime defeat at Gulf Coast Saturday.

The Eagles came out hard the first half and posted a 3-1 lead at halftime, but lost 5-4.

"All we had to do was keep our foot on the gas and not let them back in the game,” said George.

“This has been our predicament too many times this year and the results are the same. I tell them all the time that you have to be strong mentally and physically and pull together in times like these. I am hopeful that somebody will step up for us and creative a spark,” said George.

The Eagles are 10-4-1 overall and 8-2-1 in conference play.

MCC swept Co-Lin on September 19th in Wesson, MS. The Lady Eagles won 3-1, while the Eagles won 3-2.

On Wednesday night the Lady Eagles take to the field at 5 pm, while the men play at 7:15 pm.

MCC Golf Alumni in action

TROY UNIVERSITY GOLF

MACON, Ga. – The Troy University men’s golf team finished the three-day Brickyard Collegiate Championship at the Brickyard at Riverside, in eighth place, one shot ahead of fellow Sun Belt Conference member Middle Tennessee.

The tournament was played on a par 72, 7,128-yard Mark McCumber designed championship course that opened in 2005 and included nationally-ranked teams from Georgia, Clemson and Georgia Tech, which finished as the top three teams in the event.

“I was proud of our effort,” Troy coach Matt Terry said. “We will be a better team in the long run because of having played in this tournament. We should realize that we can play with the best teams in the country.”

Troy junior Justin Eaves finished tied for 44th overall with an eight-over score of 224 and senior Jordy Hayden finished tied for 52nd with scores of 11-over, 227, both Eaves and Hayden are from Meridian Community College.

The Trojans will return to action October 14-16 at the Belmont Fall Shootout in Nashville, Tenn.

“We’ll face another quality field next weekend, but we should be more comfortable in that situation,” Terry said.


SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY GOLF

NORMAL, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University men's golf team shot a final-round 2-over 282 on Monday to take second place at the 11-team D.A. Wiebring Intercollege at the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University in Normal, Ill. The Salukis placed four in the top 15 and all five in the top 20 out of 69 participants.

SIU recorded a three-round total of 854 and finished behind the University of Illinois who earned team medalist with a final-round 8-under 272 and 54-hole total of 837. The Salukis beat out of five other Missouri Valley Conference teams, including host school Illinois State, for their third second-place finish of the fall.

"We did a great job competing and everyone contributed," said coach Leroy Newton. "It's a real accomplishment to finish ahead of all the other teams in your conference, especially the defending MVC Champions on their home course."

Senior captain Matt Ellis, from Meridian C.C., shot a final-round 2-under-par 68 for the third-best score of the day. Ellis placed tied for 14th with a 54-hole total of 6-over 216.

"The wind was really blowing today, a lot more than yesterday, but I was able to make some putts which helped me score well," said Ellis. "The team played well and it was great to finish ahead of the other MVC teams."

MCC Soccer Player Named NJCAA Player of the Week

The National Junior College Athletic Association has named Meridian Community College sophomore McKenzie Butler (Pontotoc, Miss) as the NJCAA Division I women's soccer player of the week.

On the week she had 16 points on five goals and four assists in two games.

Butler opened the week with three goals and two assists in a 5-2 win over East Central. She followed that with two goals and two assists in a 7-1 win over Southwest.

The Lady Eagles are 12-1-1 (9-1) on the year and look to clinch the first MACJC South Division championship in school history when they travel to Gulf Coast this Saturday.

MCC soccer splits with Itawamba

(MERIDIAN) The Meridian Community College soccer teams took a break from MACJC South Division action to host North Division foe, Itawamba Community College Tuesday night.

The Lady Eagles picked up a 3-2 victory over ICC.

MCC's women improved to 12-1-1 on the season. The Lady Eagles look to clinch the MACJC South Division championship for the first time in school history when they travel to face Gulf Coast this Saturday.

The Eagles weren't as fortunate in their contest versus ICC. MCC's men lost 3-2 in the night cap. The Eagles fell to 10-3-1 on the year.

Both teams will be in action Saturday at Gulf Coast.

Lady Eagles play at 11:00 AM while the men take to the field at 1:00 PM.

MCC swept Gulf Coast back on September 15 in meridian. The Lady Eagles won 3-0 while the Eagles won 2-1.

MCC Men's Basketball 2007-08 schedule set

MERIDIAN - The Meridian Community College men's basketball schedule was announced this week by MCC Athletic Director, Hilary Allen. The Eagles' 25-game slate will be highlighted by 14 MACJC South Division contests, including the homecoming date slated for February 11 v. Copiah-Lincoln Community College.

MCC was 3-1 versus their local rivals (East Central and East Mississippi) last season, but struggled to a 4-10 division record.

The Eagles open up their season with a three game homestand versus Delgado (LA) Community College (Nov. 3), Wallace-Selma (Nov 7), and Marion (AL) Military Institute (Nov. 10).

Head Coach George Books and his squad will then make their first road trip of the season to face rival East Mississippi Community College on Nov. 12, before returning home to host Coahoma Community College on Nov. 17.

The Eagles will then play five of their next six ballgames on the road, vs. Marion Military Institute (Nov. 20), Wallace-Selma (Nov. 30), Delgado (Dec. 4), Coahoma (Dec. 8), and Volunteer (TN) State (Jan. 3). The lone home game in that stretch will come Nov. 12 against East Mississippi.

The 14-game MACJC South Division regular-season slate will continue begin with a home game v. Hinds Community College on Jan. 7. The division slate will continue with a Jan. 10 road contest against East Central Community College followed by a stretch of 12 consecutive league contests for MCC.

The MACJC State Tournament is scheduled for Feb. 25-28, with the Region 23 Tournament on March 4-7. The Region 23 champion will advance to the NJCAA National Championship on March 18-22 in Hutchinson, KS.

MCC Lady Eagles announce 2007-08 Basketball Schedule

MERIDIAN- An attractive 13-game home schedule, which includes a Thanksgiving weekend Rush Classic highlight Meridian Community College’s 2007-08 women's basketball schedule, as announced this week by MCC athletic director and women’s head coach Hilary Allen.

In addition, MCC's competitive 25-game, regular-season slate will feature 14 MACJC South Division contests.

Coming off last year's appearance in the NJCAA Region 23 Championship game, Coach Allen’s Lady Eagles will tip off the 2007-08 collegiate basketball competition with a two-game homestand by playing host to Delgado Community College out of Louisiana (Nov. 3), and #1 ranked Trinity Valley Community College out of Texas (Nov. 7), who is a five-time NJCAA national champion.

The Lady Eagles' first road trip of the campaign will take them up the road to Scooba to face rival- East Mississippi Community College on Nov. 12.

MCC will then host Coahoma Community College on Nov. 17 before opening up the four-team, 4-game Rush Classic tournament on Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 23-24).

The Lady Eagles will then play four consecutive road contests in four different states to cap off their non-conference slate. MCC travels to Wallace-Selma (AL) Community College on Nov. 30, Delgado (LA) Community College on Dec. 4, Coahoma (MS) Community College on Dec. 8, and Volunteer State (TN) Community College on Jan. 3.

MCC wins Halbrook Award for top athletic grad rate

JACKSON – Meridian Community College has been named winner of the Halbrook Award for having the top student-athlete graduation rate among all of the state’s 15 public community colleges. The award was presented to MCC Dean of Students Soraya Welden Sunday evening at Jackson State University in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Mississippi Association of Colleges (MAC).

MCC recorded a student-athlete graduation rate of 96.2 percent over the past school year, marking the second time since the inception of the award for the Eagles to have earned the No. 1 distinction.

“I have always said that a college’s graduation rate is the foremost barometer of the success of an athletic program,” said Dr. Scott Elliott, MCC president.

“How well your teams compete in terms of wins and losses is most certainly important, but the reality is that the percentage of junior college athletes across America who go on to make their living in the professional ranks is statistically insignificant. Therefore, it’s incumbent upon every college to be chiefly concerned with the academic progress of their student-athletes.”

“The word student comes first in the term student-athlete for a good reason,” Elliott added.

“In Mississippi, our community colleges do a great job of embracing that philosophy. Our greatest trophy is shaking the hands of those young male and female athletes and awarding diplomas when they come across that stage during commencement.”

Elliott noted that achieving such a high graduation rate requires “a team effort.”

“Our coaching staff, of course, has a lot to do with it,” he assessed.

“Most of our coaches do an exemplary job of tracking the classroom progress of their team members, starting with making certain that each athlete attends class faithfully and continuing with monitoring their test scores and conducting evening study halls. Also, our coaches make certain that any school work missed because of participation in ballgames is made up. But it takes more than a high level of commitment by our coaches. It takes teachers, counselors, tutors and others working together to promote student success. I’m so proud that I work with professionals at MCC who take a personal interest in each student persisting in achieving their educational goals.”

MCC Soccer host SW Mississippi

(MERIDIAN)- Following an undefeated month of September for both Meridian Community College soccer teams, the Eagles (9-2-1, 7-1-1) and Lady Eagles (10-1-1, 8-1) will prepare to host their second consecutive MACJC South Division opponent this month.

Southwest Mississippi Community College will visit the MCC campus for a divisional showdown on Saturday, just three days after MCC picked up a sweep over East Central on Wednesday.

MCC swept Southwest Mississippi in a road contest back on September 8.

The Lady Eagles are currently first in the MACJC South Division standings, while the Eagles are in 2nd in the men’s standings. Two teams from the South Division will make it to the MACJC State Playoffs on October 20-21.

Following Saturday’s contest with Southwest Mississippi, MCC will have three games left, two of which are with divisional opponents.

Eagle golfers in action at pro tour event

(MERIDIAN) – Five Meridian Community College golf team members experienced the thrill of a lifetime when they teed it up in the 2007 Adams Pro Series Tour Community Bank Golf Classic this week at historic Northwood County Club in Meridian, MS.

Among Eagle goflers, MCC freshman Jarrod Moulds had the best 36-hole total of 144 (70-74), 2-over par, which was highlighted by an opening round of 1-under par, 70.

Fellow Eagle freshman Joseph Konieczny fired one of the lower rounds in the event with a bogey free, 4-under par 67 on day two. He finished with a total of 148 (81-67), 6-over par.

MCC sophomore Bryant Self played steady shooting a total of 148 (74-74), 6-over par.

Eagle sophomore Joshua Ivy shot 149 (72-77), 7-over par; while freshman Clay Bounds fired 152 (73-79), 10-over par.

The Adams Golf Pro Tour Series, the so-called 'Triple A' of professional golf, is a developmental series on par with the Hooters Tour and a step below the Nationwide Tour, which the PGA Tour owns.

There are about 50 alums of the Adams Golf tour who are currently on the PGA Tour and another 75 alums that are on the Nationwide Tour.

The Adams Tour plays 12 tournaments a year, mostly in small to medium sized towns such as Texarkana, Texas, Houma, La. and Gulfport.

The top 33 scores plus ties will advance to play in the final two rounds on Friday and Saturday.

MCC’s next official college tournament will be on October 22-23 in Destin, FL at the Indian Bayou Colligate Classic.

Self, who finished with a round of 74, is one of five MCC golfers competing in the tour event. “My guys can’t win any money, but the experience is invaluable and it’s the thrill of a lifetime,” said MCC Golf Coach Sean Covich. “I don’t know of any college golfer — at a two-year or four-year institution — in America getting this type of opportunity.”

MCC soccer completes season sweep of ECCC

Both Meridian squads stay in position to make playoffs

(MERIDIAN) – The Meridian Community College soccer teams completed their season sweep of MACJC South Division rival- East Central Community College Wednesday night.

MCC swept the Warriors back on September 1 in Decatur, the Lady Eagles won by a score of 2-1 while the Eagles won 8-1.

Wednesday night in Meridian the Lady Eagles defeated ECCC by a score of 5-2.

MCC was led by sophomore team captain, McKenzie Butler who scored a hat trick with 3 goals. Butler scored one goal in the first half then added two more in the second.

Lady Eagle freshmen Holly Head and Jill Rush each added one goal a piece for MCC.

The Lady Eagles improved to 10-1-1 (8-1) on the season.

MCC’s men team wasted no time getting on the board in their contest against ECCC.

Eagle sophomore Matt Clifton scored the first two goals of the game to give MCC an early 2-0 lead.

Eagle freshman Clifford Johnson and sophomore Kyle Hutchinson added one goal a piece to give MCC a 4-0 first half lead.

The Eagles would add two more goals in second half by way of Wilson Bounds and Matthews Thomas to pull away with a 6-0 victory.

The Eagles improved to 9-2-1 (7-1-1) on the year.

With their sixth sweep of an MACJC South Division opponent, both Meridian teams look to be in great shape to make the MACJC State playoffs.

Two teams from the South Division will advance to the playoffs. The Lady Eagles are in first place in the women’s standings while the Eagles are in second place in the men’s standings.

Both MCC teams host South Division opponent Southwest Mississippi Community College this Saturday in Meridian. The Lady Eagles take to the field at 12:00 PM while the men play at 2:00 PM.

(MERIDIAN) – Five Meridian Community College golf team members will experience the thrill of a lifetime when they tee it up in the Adams Pro Series Tour Community Bank Golf Classic Wednesday at historic Northwood County Club in Meridian, MS.

The Adams Golf Pro Tour Series, the so-called 'Triple A' of professional golf, is a developmental series on par with the Hooters Tour and a step below the Nationwide Tour, which the PGA Tour owns.

There are about 50 alums of the Adams Golf tour who are currently on the PGA Tour and another 75 alums that are on the Nationwide Tour, said Adams Tour president Gary Deserrano.

"We've been around 14 years and are best described as the 'Triple A' of golf," Deserrano said.

“We have a lot of players out here who could do well on the PGA Tour who are just waiting for their shot."

The Adams Tour plays 12 tournaments a year, mostly in small to medium sized towns such as Texarkana, Texas, Houma, La. and Gulfport.

The Meridian event is the 11th tournament of the year and, according to Deserrano, the most popular.

"The players love this event," Deserrano said. "The course is wonderful and the people are great. People put the players up in their houses during the week and feed them and the club does a great job with having events to go along with the tournament."

That same generosity has been extended to five of MCC’s golfers.

Meridian natives, Clay Bounds and Jarrod moulds, along with other Mississippi residents, Joshua Ivy, Joe Konieczny, and Bryant Self, all five whom are members of the Eagle golf team, have been extended sponsors exemptions to participate in this professional golfing event.

“What a great thrill and great opportunity for these guys,” said MCC head golf coach Sean Covich.

“Because of Robert Sanford and his support, these five guys will have an opportunity to compete in a first class professional golfing event which will give them a chance to test their game against the future stars of the PGA Tour.”

Play begins Wednesday at Northwood. All five MCC golfers tee off around 1:00 PM.

MCC Soccer looks for season sweep of East Central

(MERIDIAN)- After taking a break from MACJC South Division play this past weekend by hosting the Rush Invitational, the Meridian Community College soccer teams are ready to resume their division schedule with a home contest with local-rival East Central Community College on Wednesday night.

The Lady Eagles will enter the game at 9-1-1 overall and have a MACJC South Division best 7-1 record.

“The women played great this past weekend in the Rush Invitational,” said Coach Alex George.

“We had a clean sweep winning both ballgames and everyone remained healthy.”

After splitting a pair of games in the Rush Invitational, the MCC men’s squad boasts an overall record of 8-2-1 with a 6-1-1 division record.

“We’re still in great shape to make a run at the playoffs with the men,” said George.

“We’re just ready to get back into division play.”

Meridian swept ECCC in Decatur back on September 1. The Lady Eagles won 2-1, while the Eagles defeated the Warriors soundly, 8-1.

The women begin play at 5:00 PM then the men take to the field at 7:15.
