No. 5 Trinity Valley blows past MCC

By Jamie Wachter / executive sports editor

The Meridian Community College women suffered through an off-night shooting the basketball Wednesday night against No. 5 Trinity Valley.

Unfortunately, the Eagles also suffered through a subpar defensive effort as the Cardinals flew out of Graham Gymnasium with a 99-57 win.

“All night it was really a matter of shooting,” MCC coach Hilary Allen said. “I thought we were very poor shooting from the field, shooting from the free throw line. Give them credit, it’s obviously, their quickness and their size was probably about 90 percent of the reason why we didn’t shoot well.

“But if you’re in a situation where you don’t shoot well, and we didn’t, you have to play a little better defense and we didn’t play good defense.”

The Eagles, who fell to 1-1, twice grabbed early leads at 2-0 and 4-2. However, Trinity Valley (4-0) pushed its lead to 18-9 just five minutes in. Sharda’e Johnson, though, quickly helped MCC close. Following a basket from the MCC sophomore, she then hit a 3-pointer from the right corner while being fouled. The ensuing free throw completed the four-point play and pulled the Eagles within 18-15.

MCC would go cold after that. Following a pair a field goals within a minute at the 11-minute mark of the first half, the Eagles didn’t score from the field again until four minutes remained in the half, on another Johnson bucket. In the meantime, the Cardinals widened their lead to 42-23. Trinity Valley closed the half on a 30-8 run.

“For us to be competitive with a team like that, we need a few more games under our belt to do that,” Allen said.

The Eagles didn’t help themselves at the free throw line, either. MCC made just 9-of-24 from the charity stripe — 7-of-19 in the first half.

After the break, Trinity Valley stretched its lead to 76-34 on a Michelle White layup with 14:20 remaining as the Cardinals opened on a 18-6 streak. The Eagles would battle within 80-44 at the nine-minute mark following a 7-2 run in 1:18. Philadelphia’s Tiara Logan scored three of her six points in the run before MCC turned to its bench.

“I’m a little disappointed with our effort, I thought we’d play harder against a team like that,” Allen said. “If my second team is going to go out there and play not only harder but play better defense, we’re heading into a situation where we’re going to have to make some decisions on some people.”

The Eagles were led by Kemper County product Brittany Bohannon’s 10 points. Kierra Jones pulled down 11 rebounds off the bench to pace MCC, while Porsha Wilson added eight points — all in the second half —and Johnson scored nine.

Trinity Valley was led by Marcisa McMillan and Mechel’le Thomas, who each scored 16. Tawanna Lee added 15 and White had 11 and nine rebounds. Brittney Dukes led the Cardinals with 11 rebounds, while adding nine points.

Wednesday

Lady Eagles drop decision to Trinity Valley

(MERIDIAN) – Entering Wednesday night’s contest against No. 5 Trinity Valley Community College the Meridian Community College Lady Eagles knew they would have their hands full.

For the past two seasons Trinity Valley has played MCC in the Graham Gymnasium on their way to the Chipola College Tournament in Florida and the Lady Cards have always escaped with wins, from tough, scrappy play out of the Lady Eagles.

Meeting number three between the two teams wouldn’t be the same as Trinity Valley rolled to a big win, 99-57 over MCC.

MCC got within three points midway through the first half but then Trinity Valley went on a big run before halftime to take a 56-28 lead and the game was pretty much in hand.

The second half was all Trinity Valley as they showed why they’re a top five team in the NJCAA polls.

Leading the way for MCC was sophomore Brittany Bohannon out of Kemper County with 10 points. Sophomore Sharde Johnson added 9 points for the Lady Eagles.

Marcisa McMillan from Trinity Valley led all scorers with 16 points. Pre season All America, Gloria Brown added 14 points for the Lady Cards while Michelle Thomas also had 14 points.

With the win, Trinity Velley improves to 4-0 while MCC falls to 1-1.

The Lady Eagles will be in action Saturday when they travel to Wallace State-Selma, meanwhile the MCC men will face East Mississippi Thursday night in Scooba, MS.

Dickerson started every game for MCC last season at the centerfield position with a batting average of .387 with 21 doubles, 5 triples, and 15 homeruns. He also had 54 RBI and 14 stolen bases.

Jonathan Pace, an infielder from Terry, signed with the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana University- who went 37-22 (W-L) last season. Pace started every game for MCC at the second base position with a batting average of .373, with 10 doubles, 2 triples and 2 homeruns. He also had 35 RBI and 9 stolen bases.

Jonathan Thompson, a right-handed pitcher from Baton Rouge, signed with 2009 College World Series participant and Conference USA power, University of Southern Mississippi where he will play under former MCC head coach, Scott Berry who now leads the Golden Eagles. Thompson is a transfer from Bossier Parish Community College where he had the fifth best batting average (.373) and fifth lowest ERA average (3.93) on the Cavaliers team in 2009.

Dickerson, Pace and Thompson are all expected to start for MCC this upcoming spring season. The Eagles will be the defending NJCAA Region 23 Champions and looking for back-to-back trips to the NJCAA District Tournament. Winner of the District will advance to play in the NJCAA Division I College World Series in Grand Junction, CO in may 2010.

Corey Dickerson, an outfielder from Brookhaven, who was drafted by the Colorado Rockies last year, will sign with Southeastern Conference power-Mississippi State University.

Jonathan Pace, an infielder from Terry, will sign with the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana University who went 37-22 (W-L) last season.

Jonathan Thompson, a right-handed pitcher from Baton Rouge, will sign with 2009 College World Series participant and Conference USA power, University of Southern Mississippi where he will play under former MCC head coach, Scott Berry who now leads the Golden Eagles.

MCC basketball faces tough test this week

Lady Eagles vs #5 Trinity Valley (TX) (Wed 6:00 pm)
Eagles at East Mississippi (Thurs 7:30 pm)
Eagles/Lady Eagles @ Wallace State-Selma (Set 2:00/4:00 pm)

(MERIDIAN) – The Meridian Community College women’s basketball team started their season with an easy double-digit victory (79-66) over visiting Bishop State Saturday night. But the competition level will take a huge jump up this week as the Lady Eagles will face national power, Trinity Valley Community College out of Athens, TX. Tip-off at the Graham Gymnasium is set for 6:00 PM on Wednesday.

Trinity Valley will roll into town as the 5th ranked team in the nation starting off their season undefeated at 3-0. TVCC won their first game of the season by a score of 102-57 and last week they defeated 9th ranked Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College.

The Lady Cards will be led by pre-season All America, Gloria Brown who is averaged a double-double, and last season she averaged 12 points and 12 rebounds per game. Trinity Valley will also return Darriel Gaynor who averaged 10 points, 8 assist and 2 steals per game last season.

“They’re on their way to Florida, playing in a huge tournament down there and were looking for a game along the way,” said MCC head women’s basketball coach and athletic director, Hilary Allen.

“We’ve played them the past three seasons. Two years ago the game was tied with five minutes left but we eventually lost by nine and last year we were ahead by six at halftime, but they came out in the second half and hit 13 three pointers.”

“It’s been great for our program playing them, its something we point at during pre season conditioning getting ready to play them, it’s a great opportunity . We’re trying to get our program to there level so it’s a great chance to play an outstanding team. It’s a game we get to play at home which is huge.”

For the Lady Eagles to have a chance at knocking off one of the top teams in the country, Coach Allen looks to his experienced line-up to give him a chance.

“I’ve got a group of players that have already played a season of 30 games. We’ve got four returning starters plus a NCAA DI transfer, so I’m basically starting five sophomores and I think that’s an advantage for us.”

LaDerica Campbell is the transfer for MCC. She played one season at Jackson State University before transferring to Meridian.

In their only game of the season thus far, MCC was led by sophomore Tiara Logan out of Philadelphia with 18 points and Campbell with 14 points.

On the men’s side, Head Coach George Brooks and his Eagles are off to one of their better starts in recent memory with a perfect 3-0 record.

The Eagles have managed to win some close ballgames, average margin of victory has been five points.

Their opponent this week is no stranger, longtime rival East Mississippi. Although the teams did not meet last season, the programs are scheduled to play a home-and-home this season. The EMCC-MCC men will face off in Scooba at 7:30 pm on Thursday.

“Due to MCC joining the Miss-Lou conference and leaving the MACJC last season, they (EMCC) choose not to play us, but it just makes since to play the closest programs around so we’re looking forward to renewing this rivalry,” said Allen.

Likewise, EMCC has started off their season undefeated, going 4-0 thus far and will face Hinds Community College Monday night before hosting MCC Thursday.

MCC has been led by freshman Rashad Robinson, who is averaging nearly 20 points per game (19.6) in his first three games.

Both MCC men’s and women’s teams are undefeated and take their perfect records up against some stiff competition this week.

Eagles improve to 3-0, Lady Eagles tip-off season with a ‘W’

(MERIDIAN) - Meridian Community College basketball played their first men's and women's double header of the season at Graham Gymnasium on Saturday as they hosted Bishop State Community College.

The Eagles looked to remain unbeaten after two straight wins to start their year while the Lady Eagles were playing their season opener Saturday night.

MCC men 78
Bishop State 70

In the first game of the evening the MCC men would face Bishop State. The Eagles led Bishop State 36-34 at halftime despite going 1 for 7 from behind the three point arch in the opening half.

Bishop State gained the momentum early in the second half, leading as much as eleven points but the Eagles responded with a big run of their own taking an eleven point lead of their own with 5:00 minutes left in the game, 71-62.

Bishop State pulled within six, 73-67 making it a two possession game with just over 2:00 minutes to play.

Down the stretch in the final seconds MCC finally converted on free throws to pull away and win, 78-70.

The Eagles were once again led in scoring by Rashad Robinson, the freshman had 18 points. Three other Eagles were in double figures as Brandon Pettaway had 15 points, Jared Hudnall scored 13 points and MaQuirus Burton added 11 points.

MCC improved to 3-0 on the season and prepare to face rival-East Mississippi on the road this Thursday night.

MCC women 79
Bishop State 66

The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles opened up their season Saturday night against visiting Bishop State.

As has been the case during the Hillary Allen era at MCC, his Lady Eagles like to run and gun, playing a fast paced tempo and the first half of the season opener was true to form as MCC jumped out to a 49-27 halftime lead over Bishop State.

MCC continued to dominate in the second half and won by a final of 79-66 to win their season opener.

The Lady Eagles were led by Tiara Logan with 21 points.

MCC (1-0) will play again on Wednesday at 7 pm when they host Trinity Valley.

Lady Eagles fall 3-0 to Tyler in District Championship

Tyler 3
MCC 0

(MERIDIAN) - The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles soccer team closed its 2009 season with a hard-fought 3-0 setback to 7th-ranked Tyler (TX) Junior College on a sunny, warm Saturday afternoon at the Northeast Recreational Complex in Meridian.

Both teams exchanged possession most of the first half while trying to gain sustained momentum.

Meridian had multiple chances to score, with an outstanding opportunity to get on the board at the 20:00 minute mark in the first half. A penalty was called on Tyler and the Lady Eagles had a free kick right in front of their opponents goal. Christina Murray, MCC’s leading scorer, took the kick but the ball was deflected by Tyler’s goalie which led to multiple shots on goal by MCC but the Lady Eagles were unable to get the ball in the goal and the score remained 0-0 late into the first half.

As the clock wound down under a minute to play before halftime, Tyler netted the first goal of the game with just :23 left in the opening half and took the lead 1-0 but just as important the visiting team took the momentum into halftime.

“We had them on their heels the entire first half,” said MCC head coach Alex George.

“I felt like we had a lot of opportunities to score, seven or eight shots on goal but just couldn’t get one across.”

Down 1-0 to start the second half, MCC was under pressure to score first and get back even in the contest, but any hopes of a comeback was squashed early in the second half as Tyler scored within the first ten minutes of intermission to take a 2-0 lead.

"We made some adjustments for the second half but they were able to get a couple of shots behind us,” said George.

The game was officially put away by Tyler midway in the second half as they scored another goal and took the lead for good, 3-0.

“I don’t think that the 3-0 final score necessarily depicts the entire game because we fought hard the entire game but just came up short,” added George.

“We’ve just got to build off of this for next year, I mean 15:00 minutes into the game we were very confident we were going to win this game but when they scored with :23 seconds left before half we were pressing the entire second half to regain the lead instead of taking it one goal at a time.”

This was the second consecutive NJCAA District Championship appearance for the Lady Eagles after claiming back-to-back NJCAA Region 23 titles. All in all, the Lady Eagles have captured three straight championships, winning their first post season title in 2007 with the MACJC State Championship then back-to-back NJCA Region 23 titles in 2008 and 2009.

Former MCC pitcher improves to 4-0 in postseason, wins Game 5 of World Series

Lee wins a cliff-hanger- Ace not as dominant, but keeps Phillies alive

By Peter Abraham, Boston Globe Staff | November 3, 2009
PHILADELPHIA - Cliff Lee could not wait to pitch Game 5 of the World Series last night, if only because he could stop answering questions about why he didn’t start Game 4.

When Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel decided not to rush Lee back into the World Series on three days’ rest, it triggered a debate over how best to use the lefthander against the Yankees.

That the Phillies lost Game 4 only intensified the talk.

With his team facing elimination, Lee helped extend the season by pitching effectively into the eighth inning as the Phillies beat the Yankees, 8-6.

Lee was not as sharp as he was in Game 1 when he held the Yankees to one unearned run on six hits, striking out 10 without a walk.

But he was as good as the Phillies needed him to be. On a night when the Philadelphia offense, that is to say Chase Utley and his two home runs, hammered Yankee pitching for eight runs, Lee did his job well enough by allowing five runs on seven hits.

“Anytime as a starting pitcher you give your team a chance to win the game, you have to feel good about it,’’ Lee said. “It was a group effort and we’re still fighting. My command was a little off. It was a game where I had to battle more than I’ve had to in the last few games and we had to score a few more runs.’’

Lee joined Hall of Famer Steve Carlton as the only Phillies to win two games in one World Series. He is 4-0 with a 1.56 ERA in five postseason starts.

“He did it again, he keeps winning for us,’’ catcher Carlos Ruiz said. “He gave the team enough. The only thing we had to do was win that game and we did.’’

The most important inning for Lee was the first as he limited what could have been significant damage by the Yankees.

After an RBI double by Alex Rodriguez with two outs, Lee walked Nick Swisher. But he got Robinson Cano to fly to left field. Lee did not allow another hit until the fifth inning, when the Yankees scored their second run. By then, the Phillies had a 6-1 lead.

“I felt we put some better at-bats on [Lee] tonight,’’ Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “We hit some balls hard . . . I didn’t think he was as sharp as he didn’t throw as many strikes. He wasn’t ahead in the count as much as he was at our place.’’

Lee started the eighth inning with an 8-2 lead but appeared to tire as Johnny Damon led off with a single before doubles by Mark Teixeira and Rodriguez gave the Yankees two more runs. A sacrifice fly by Cano off reliever Chan Ho Park trimmed the lead to 8-5.

“Was I thinking about taking him out? Somewhat,’’ said Manuel, who has little faith in his bullpen. “But I wasn’t ready to take him out. I definitely wanted him to go back out there.’’

Lee threw 112 pitches. The question he will get now is whether he would be able to pitch in relief if the series reaches Game 7 Thursday. Lee would go into that game having had two days’ rest.

“As far as my availability, I’m available,’’ Lee said. “I think I’ll be fine. You’d have to talk to Charlie about what his plans are, but I’ll pitch whenever they want me to pitch. I don’t really get that sore.’’
Manuel is hoping for some assistance from the weather.

“Got an off day [today], maybe it’ll rain the next day. I can get him in on three days’ rest like you guys are talking about,’’ he said. “I’ll talk to him about what he thinks about it, if he can pitch at all.’’

Eagles capture season opener

(MERIDIAN) -The Meridian Community College men's basketball team started their 2009-2010 season at home against New Horizon on Monday night.

MCC led 42-39 at halftime, then found themselves tied up late in the game.

Deionte Dean, a freshman from Jackson, scored the game winning layup with :06.8 seconds left in the game to seal the victory for MCC.

The Eagles won their season opener by two points over the visiting Wildcats, 80-78.

Dean ended up with eight points on the game.

Rashad Robinson, a freshman out of Newton, led MCC in scoring with 21points while Jared Hudnall, a sophomore from Meridian, added 19 points in the victory for MCC.

Reggie Lewis had 16 points to lead New Horizon.

The Eagles (1-0) return to action on Thursday at 7 PM as they host Mississippi Elite.

Lady Eagles have two named to All Region team

(MERIDIAN)- The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles soccer team had two of their own named to the 2009 All Region team following their championship run.

Terri Brown and Christina Murray were both named to the All Region 23 team.

Murray, a sophomore midfielder from Kingston, Jamaica, compiled 22 goals and nine assist. She also served as captain of this year’s 2009 Region 23 Championship team and was the National Junior College Player of the Week back in October.

Brown, a freshman goalkeeper of Bristol England, served as goalie for the Lady Eagles with nine “clean sheets” and 140 saves. She started 16 games with 1280 minutes played and only 17 goals allowed all season.

These two All Region stars will be in action Saturday as the Lady Eagles host the 2009 NJCAA District Championship game versus No. 7 Tyler (TX) Junior College at Northeast Soccer Complex.

Former Eagle pitcher set to start Game 5 of World Series

(MERIDIAN) – Former Meridian Community College pitcher, Cliff Lee, is slated to start Game 5 of the World Series for the Philadelphia Phillies as they try to stave off elimination down 3 games to 1 against the New York Yankees tonight.

Lady Eagles capture Region 23 title

For the third consecutive season the Meridian Community College Lady Eagle soccer program has captured a post-season championship.

In 2007, MCC won their first ever title by capturing the MACJC State Championship, in 2008 MCC did one better by capturing the NJCAA Region 23 Championship and advanced to the program’s first ever NJCAA District Tournament. This season, head coach Alex George and his Lady Eagles added yet another banner to the young program as MCC won back to back Region 23 championships with a 3-1 victory over Pearl River Community College on Saturday.

Freshman, Anastasia Vogel of Pontotoc, MS, led the way for MCC as she scored two goals. Kelsey Edwards, a freshman from Terry, MS, added an additional goal for the Lady Eagles as they will now advance to their second consecutive NJCAA District Championship which MCC is set to host this weekend.

In men’s action, MCC faced off against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Saturday night for the 2009 NJCAA Region title.

The game was tied up 0-0 after a scoreless first half, but MGCCC scored a late goal and the Eagles fell short 1 - 0.

Congratulations to MCC head coach, Alex George (pictured left) who was named the 2009 NJCAA Region 23 Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year, he is joined by his assistant coach, Michael Smith.
