MCC Baseball Splits Road Set At Delgado

The Meridian Community College Eagles headed into the weekend needing crucial victories to stay in control of its own destiny of capturing the 2012 Miss-Lou Conference Championship. The Eagles were able to salvage a doubleheader split (5-2, 0-5) with the Delgado Community College Dolphins at Kirsh-Rooney Stadium in New Orleans.

MCC moved its overall record to 28-18 and 5-3 in Miss-Lou Conference play, while Delgado is now 24-16 and 4-7 in league play. MCC remains in first place after its doubleheader split, while the Dolphins were officially eliminated from winning the Miss-Lou Conference Championship. The final game of the three-game set will take place Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Sophomore Wes Stokes tossed seven strong innings to lead the Eagles in its three-run victory in the opening game of the doubleheader. Stokes (5-0) threw his second complete game of the season and finished the game with five strikeouts.

Delgado took its only lead of the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 2-0 lead over MCC. Bubby Riley drove in the first run for the Dolphins on an RBI double and Logan Jones followed with an RBI single to give Delgado the two-run lead.

MCC answered with three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 3-2 lead over the Dolphins. Kasey Hinton drove in the first run of the game for the Eagles on an RBI single and Wade Wass knocked in a pair of runs with a double to give MCC a one-run edge.

MCC scored one run in the sixth and seventh inning to secure the 5-2 victory. Tyler Dixon had an RBI double in the sixth inning, while Hinton drove in the final run of the game for MCC on a double in the seventh inning.

MCC finished the game with eight hits and Delgado ended the opening game of the doubleheader with six hits. Hinton led the Eagles with three hits and Jonathan Youngblood added a pair of base hits in the victory. Riley led the charge for the Dolphins with a pair of hits, while Jones added an RBI base hit for Delgado.

Cody Deckwa tossed a complete game three-hitter in the second game of the doubleheader to salvage the split for the Dolphins. Delgado scored its first two runs of the game with a couple of home runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead over MCC. Daniel Brockhoeft and Angelo Bruno each had a solo home run in the first inning to give the Dolphins a two-run lead.

Brockhoeft extended the lead for Delgado in the second inning on a two-run home run and Jake Fryman added a solo home run in the fourth to lead the Dolphins to the win.

Wade Wass, Gabe Woods, and Tyler Dixon each had a base hit in the loss for MCC, while Brandon Smith (2-2) took the pitching loss on the mound.

MCC Softball Splits With Judson College

The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles split a doubleheader (5-4, 4-5) with Judson College in softball action Tuesday afternoon at Tommy McDonald Field. The Lady Eagles moved its overall record to 12-17 after the split with Judson College. MCC will return to the field Thursday at Alabama Southern for a doubleheader which begins at 2 p.m.

The Lady Eagles held off a late rally by Judson College in the opening game of the doubleheader to earn the one-run victory. MCC trailed Judson College 1-0 going to the bottom of the first inning, but the Lady Eagles would battle back with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. The first run of the game scored on a sacrifice fly by Coleigh Carnegie and the second run came across to score on a single by Shumond Hughes.

The Lady Eagles stretched its lead with another pair of runs in the fourth inning to make the score 4-1. Mallory Lowe delivered the big blow in the inning for MCC on a two-run single to give the Lady Eagles a three-run lead. Judson College answered with a run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Lady Eagles answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Miranda Agee knocked in the run for MCC on an RBI triple to give the Lady Eagles another three-run edge.

Judson scored twice in the sixth inning, but the Lady Eagles were able to hang on for the 5-4 victory. MCC finished the game with eight hits and Devin Batson led the Lady Eagles in the opening game with a pair of base hits. Agee added a single to go along with a triple, while Hughes added two singled in the win. Lowe (6-5) took the pitching win on the mound for MCC and retired the final four batters in the game to give the Lady Eagles the dramatic win.

Judson College scored a run in the eighth inning to take the one-run victory over MCC to salvage a split. Judson scored a run in the eighth inning when the game went into an international tiebreaker. The two teams exchanged the lead on two different occasions, but Judson was able to take the victory late.

The Lady Eagles collected nine hits in the contest with Agee, Batson, and Carnegie each having two hits apiece. Kelsey Wilson (6-9) took the pitching loss for the Lady Eagles in the second game of the doubleheader.

MCC Baseball Sweeps Jones

The Meridian Community College Eagles snapped a five-game winning streak by securing a doubleheader sweep (7-4, 5-2) over Jones County Junior College Tuesday afternoon at Scaggs Field. The Eagles improved to 25-17 with the sweep, while the Bobcats dropped its overall record to 21-14. Meridian will return to the diamond Friday afternoon on the road at Coahoma for a doubleheader scheduled for noon. Jones will return to the field Saturday in a key MACJC South Division doubleheader against Pearl River Community College beginning at 2 p.m.

The Eagles scored all seven of its runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to run away with the win in the opening game of the doubleheader. The Bobcats scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning and held a 1-0 lead for most of the game. Chad Guice delivered an RBI single for Jones in the fourth inning that scored Tilur Smith to give the Bobcats the lead.

The Eagles struck for seven runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-1 lead over the Bobcats. Gabe Woods drove in the first run of the game for the Eagles on a single to tie the game at 1-1. Former Meridian High standout Dallas Hannah followed with a two-run single to give MCC a 3-1 lead. Hannah led the Eagles at the plate with a pair of base hits. MCC added two more runs in the inning on an infield error by Jones and Brian Donohoe drove in the final run of the game for the Eagles on a double to right field.

Jones added three runs in the final inning, but the late inning rally would fall short as MCC held on for the three-run victory. Zach Allen added a two-run single in the seventh inning for Jones, while Cody Dedeaux added an RBI single in the final frame for the Bobcats. MCC finished the game with six hits and Jones collected nine hits in the loss.

Michael Manley (6-3) picked up the pitching win for Meridian by working six innings and collecting four strikeouts. Jeremy Kidd took the loss out of the bullpen for the Bobcats.

Sophomore Wade Wass smashed a two-run home run in the fifth inning and the Eagles were able to outlast Jones for the doubleheader sweep.

Jones came out early and scored a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead on an error by the Eagles, but MCC would battle back in the third inning. Johnny Tolson tied the game on an RBI single and Wass followed with a single to left field that plated another run to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Jones answered with a run in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2. Max Wade started the rally for the Bobcats by reaching on a double and later scored on a single by Dedeaux to tie the game at 2-2. The Eagles took the lead right back from the Bobcats in the bottom of the fourth inning with a run to make the score 3-2. Blake Barrow drove a double off the wall in right center field that scored Hannah to give MCC the one-run edge.

The Eagles extended the lead with a two-run homer from Wass in the fifth inning to propel MCC to the doubleheader sweep. The home run by Wass now give the Pensacola, FL native 18 for the season which is number one in the country according to the NJCAA.

Brandon Hallford (1-2) earned the pitching win out of the bullpen for the Eagles, while Caleb DeLee earned his second save of the season. Cody Brewer took the pitching loss in relief for the Bobcats.

MCC Baseball Swept By LSU-Eunice

The Meridian Community College Eagles suffered its fifth straight loss Saturday afternoon and was also dropped the final game in its three-game series with LSU-Eunice by a final score of 3-1. The Eagles dropped its overall record to 23-17 with the series sweep and LSU-Eunice improved to 35-3.

Brandon Smith pitched seven solid innings for MCC and earned a no decision in the contest. Smith gave up just one earned run and finished the game with three strikeouts. LSU-Eunice starting pitcher Chad Boutte also pitched seven strong innings and earned a no decision for the Bengals. Boutte gave up just one earned run and collected four strikeouts.

Jackson Lowery (2-3) suffered the pitching loss out of the bullpen for Meridian by working just one inning and allowing two runs. Both of the runs surrendered by Lowery were not earned runs in the game as MCC made a costly error in the eighth inning to allow LSU-Eunice to score just enough runs to defeat the Eagles.

MCC finished the game with six hits and LSU-Eunice ended the game with 10 hits. Jonathan Youngblood and Johnny Tolson led the Eagles with two hits apiece, while Blake Barrow added a bunt single. Barrow scored the only run of the game for the Eagles which came in the sixth inning.

Dalton Herrington led the charge for the Bengals with three hits, while Landon Thibodeaux added three hits and a pair of RBI’s for LSU-Eunice.

MCC will return to action Tuesday at Scaggs Field against Jones County Junior College in a scheduled doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Jones will enter the doubleheader after splitting a MACJC doubleheader against Mississippi Gulf Coast on Saturday afternoon (7-3, 0-7) The Bobcats are currently ranked number 16 according to the latest NJCAA Division II Baseball Poll.

MCC Loses Second Game At LSU-Eunice

The Meridian Community College Eagles dropped its second game of a three-game series at LSU-Eunice Friday night by a final score of 10-2. MCC is now 23-16 overall for the season after the eight-run loss and LSU-Eunice improved to 34-3 for the 2012 season. The Eagles have now lost four straight games after the loss Friday night.

The Eagles finished the game with just five hits and the Bengals ended the game with 10 hits. The story of the game for the Eagles was the pitching staff allowing 11 walks and Meridian had four errors on defense in the game.

Gabe Woods led MCC with a two-run single that came with two outs in the first inning that gave the Eagles its only lead of the game. LSU-Eunice scored five runs in the fourth inning and never looked back in taking the 10-2 victory over Meridian.

Johnny Tolson, Wade Wass, Jonathan Youngblood, and Blake Barrow each ended the game with one hit apiece. Stuart Turner led LSU-Eunice with three base hits and drove in one run, while Dalton Herrington had two base hits.

Andrew Chesteen suffered the pitching loss for MCC, while Brady Wilson notched the pitching win for the Bengals.

The final game of the series will take place Saturday at 1 p.m.

MCC Drops Series Opener At LSU-Eunice

The Meridian Community College Eagles dropped the opening game in its three-game series with LSU-Eunice on the road Thursday night by a final score of 5-4. The Eagles dropped its overall record to 23-15 with the loss and LSU-Eunice improved to 33-3 with the victory.

MCC opened the game with three runs in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead over the Bengals. Wade Wass connected on a three-run home run in the first inning to give the Eagles the lead and that now gives Wass 17 home runs for the season.

Meridian scratched another run across in the top of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 4-0. Johnny Tolson drove in the run for the Eagles on a ground out to give MCC a four-run edge.

The Bengals answered with a run in the sixth inning to cut the MCC lead to 4-1. Scott Carriere drove in the run on an RBI single for LSU-Eunice to bring the Bengals to within three runs. LSU-Eunice tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with a three-run home run by Dylan Herrington and Landon Thibodeaux drove in the game winning run on a single in the eighth to give the Bengals the victory.

Michael Manley (5-3) took the pitching loss out of the bullpen by working the final two innings, while Zac Pearson took the pitching win out of the bullpen for the Bengals.

Kasey Hinton and Gabe Woods led the Eagles with two hits apiece for MCC, while Samuel Peterson added a single in the loss. MCC finished the game with six hits, while LSU-Eunice had nine hits. Herrington led the Bengals with three hits and Thibodeaux added a pair of base hits.

MCC will return to action Friday in the second game of the series against LSU-Eunice. The second game of the series will begin at 6 p.m.

MCC Golf Finishes Sixth At Red Wolf Classic

The Meridian Community College golf team concluded its final round Tuesday afternoon at the Arkansas State Red Wolf Classic in Jonesboro, AR. The Eagles finished the tournament with a final team score of 873 (21 over par) which was good enough for sixth place in the field of 22 teams. The Eagles were the only junior college among the teams entered in the Red Wolf Classic. Some of teams that were a part of the field included: Arkansas State, Vanderbilt, Arkansas-Little Rock, Austin Peay, Jacksonville State, Troy, Louisiana-Monroe, Depaul, and Oral Roberts.

“We didn’t play our best golf, but we able to rebound and put up some great numbers to finish strong,” said MCC head golf coach Clinton Hales. “This was a very solid field for our team to be a part of and this is the type of tournament that will prepare us for the big tournaments left on our schedule.”

Arkansas-Little Rock won the tournament championship after completing the final round with a team score of 848 (4 under par) and Austin Peay finished in second place with a team score of 857 (5 over par). Vanderbilt finished the field in third place with a team score of 864 (12 over par), while Jacksonville State and Troy tied for fourth place with a score of 871 (19 over par).

Alex Grannon of MCC was the top finisher for the green and white with a final score of 217 (4 over par) which was good enough for a tie of 14th position. T.J. Morgan and Dylan Brown finished tied for 29th with a final score of 219 (6 over par). Jake Stirling ended the tournament tied for 40th with a score of 220 (7 over par) and Easton Key fired a final tournament score of 278 (14 over par) which was good enough for a tie for 78th in the field.

MCC will return to the links April 16-17 at the NJCAA District IV Championship Tournament in Coco Beach, FL. The tournament will take place at Rockledge Country Club and the Eagles won a tournament at the same course during the fall season. MCC won the District IV Preview Tournament at Rockledge six months ago by 23 strokes over Central Alabama Community College. Meridian is currently ranked number one according to the latest NJCAA Division I poll.

MCC Baseball Drops Series Finale To BRCC

The Meridian Community College Eagles couldn’t complete the series sweep Sunday at Scaggs Field as Baton Rouge Community College won the final game in its three-game series with the Eagles by a final score of 3-1. MCC dropped its overall record to 23-13 with the loss and 4-2 in Miss-Lou Conference play, while the Bears improved to 18-22 with the win and 1-2 in league play.

The Bears took the first lead of the game in the top of the second inning to make the score 1-0. Jesse Buratt led the inning off with a double and later scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by Christian McMorris to give Baton Rouge a one-run lead. MCC answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. Sophomore catcher Wade Wass delivered a solo home run over the wall in left field to tie the game at 1-1 heading to the third inning. The home run for Wass was number 16 for the season which is number one in the NJCAA.

Baton Rouge took the lead for good in the top of the sixth with a run to make the score 2-1. Matt Willis drove the run home for the Bears on an RBI single to give BRCC a one-run lead. The Bears added another run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Jacob Williams to lead Baton Rouge to the Miss-Lou Conference victory over MCC.

Buratt picked up the pitching win for the Bears by pitching a complete game and collecting five strikeouts. Brandon Smith (1-1) took the loss on the mound for the Eagles by working six innings and allowing two earned runs. The Eagles finished the game with seven hits and MCC left seven runners stranded on the bases. Baton Rouge ended the game with eight hits.

Samuel Peterson led the Eagles with a pair of base hits, while Johnny Tolson added a base hit. Brian Donohoe, Dallas Hannah, and Kasey Hinton each finished the game with one hit apiece. Williams and Willis led the Bears with two hits apiece, while Buratt added a double for BRCC.
