MCC Baseball Drops Series Finale To BRCC

The Meridian Community College Eagles couldn’t complete the series sweep Sunday at Scaggs Field as Baton Rouge Community College won the final game in its three-game series with the Eagles by a final score of 3-1. MCC dropped its overall record to 23-13 with the loss and 4-2 in Miss-Lou Conference play, while the Bears improved to 18-22 with the win and 1-2 in league play.

The Bears took the first lead of the game in the top of the second inning to make the score 1-0. Jesse Buratt led the inning off with a double and later scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by Christian McMorris to give Baton Rouge a one-run lead. MCC answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. Sophomore catcher Wade Wass delivered a solo home run over the wall in left field to tie the game at 1-1 heading to the third inning. The home run for Wass was number 16 for the season which is number one in the NJCAA.

Baton Rouge took the lead for good in the top of the sixth with a run to make the score 2-1. Matt Willis drove the run home for the Bears on an RBI single to give BRCC a one-run lead. The Bears added another run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Jacob Williams to lead Baton Rouge to the Miss-Lou Conference victory over MCC.

Buratt picked up the pitching win for the Bears by pitching a complete game and collecting five strikeouts. Brandon Smith (1-1) took the loss on the mound for the Eagles by working six innings and allowing two earned runs. The Eagles finished the game with seven hits and MCC left seven runners stranded on the bases. Baton Rouge ended the game with eight hits.

Samuel Peterson led the Eagles with a pair of base hits, while Johnny Tolson added a base hit. Brian Donohoe, Dallas Hannah, and Kasey Hinton each finished the game with one hit apiece. Williams and Willis led the Bears with two hits apiece, while Buratt added a double for BRCC.
