MCC Baseball Splits With Delgado

The Meridian Community College Eagles opened its three-game Miss-Lou Conference series with Delgado Community College on Saturday at Scaggs Field with good news and bad news. The Eagles took a dramatic victory in the opening game of its doubleheader with the Dolphins by a final score of 9-8, but dropped the second game in the twin bill by a final of 12-7. MCC moved its overall record to 19-11 with the split and Delgado is now 18-7 after action on Saturday. The final game of the three-game series will begin Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Wade Wass delivered a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give MCC a comeback victory in the first game of the doubleheader. Wass finished the game with two home runs to bring his total for the season to 13 after the completion of the first game. Jonathan Youngblood led the Eagles three hits and scored one run for MCC. Gabe Woods added a solo home run in the victory for MCC and that was his second of the season. Kasey Hinton and Johnny Tolson each added two hits, while former Meridian High standout Dallas Hannah chipped in with a base hit.

MCC finished with 13 hits and Delgado had 15 hits in the first game of the doubleheader. Daniel Brockhoeft led the Dolphins with three hits, while Sean McMullen had a pair of hits for Delgado. Michael Manley earned the pitching win for the Eagles by working one inning out of the bullpen.

The Dolphins scored seven runs in the final two innings to salvage a split with MCC. McMullen led the charge in the game for Delgado with three hits and four runs. Angelo Bruno had six RBI’s in the game for Delgado on three base hits. Delgado finished the game with 13 hits and the Eagles finished with the same hit total in the second game of the doubleheader. Youngblood led the Eagles with two hits, including two RBI’s, while Wass added a solo home run late in the game to give him 14 for the season which leads the NJCAA.

Brandon Hallford took the loss out of the bullpen for MCC and Pierce Liberta went the distance to earn the pitching win for the Dolphins.
