MCC Softball Splits With Judson College

The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles split a doubleheader (5-4, 4-5) with Judson College in softball action Tuesday afternoon at Tommy McDonald Field. The Lady Eagles moved its overall record to 12-17 after the split with Judson College. MCC will return to the field Thursday at Alabama Southern for a doubleheader which begins at 2 p.m.

The Lady Eagles held off a late rally by Judson College in the opening game of the doubleheader to earn the one-run victory. MCC trailed Judson College 1-0 going to the bottom of the first inning, but the Lady Eagles would battle back with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. The first run of the game scored on a sacrifice fly by Coleigh Carnegie and the second run came across to score on a single by Shumond Hughes.

The Lady Eagles stretched its lead with another pair of runs in the fourth inning to make the score 4-1. Mallory Lowe delivered the big blow in the inning for MCC on a two-run single to give the Lady Eagles a three-run lead. Judson College answered with a run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Lady Eagles answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Miranda Agee knocked in the run for MCC on an RBI triple to give the Lady Eagles another three-run edge.

Judson scored twice in the sixth inning, but the Lady Eagles were able to hang on for the 5-4 victory. MCC finished the game with eight hits and Devin Batson led the Lady Eagles in the opening game with a pair of base hits. Agee added a single to go along with a triple, while Hughes added two singled in the win. Lowe (6-5) took the pitching win on the mound for MCC and retired the final four batters in the game to give the Lady Eagles the dramatic win.

Judson College scored a run in the eighth inning to take the one-run victory over MCC to salvage a split. Judson scored a run in the eighth inning when the game went into an international tiebreaker. The two teams exchanged the lead on two different occasions, but Judson was able to take the victory late.

The Lady Eagles collected nine hits in the contest with Agee, Batson, and Carnegie each having two hits apiece. Kelsey Wilson (6-9) took the pitching loss for the Lady Eagles in the second game of the doubleheader.
