MCC Falls To Northwest

The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles got hot at the
right time heading into its match against Northwest Mississippi Community
College Tuesday evening. The Lady Eagles had won four straight matches coming
into play Tuesday night at C.D. Smith Field to open the 2014 MACJC State
Playoffs and the home team was looking to keep its streak going on its home
turf.
MCC saw its season come to a sudden end as Northwest
Mississippi would score the eventual game winning goal in the final 15 minutes
of play to secure a narrow 2-1 victory.
The Lady Rangers will now advance to the semifinal round
of the MACJC playoffs which will be played at Jones County Junior College this
weekend.
Northwest Mississippi was able to strike first in the
13th minute of the match to take a 1-0 lead over MCC. Abigail Morales scored
the goal for the Lady Rangers and Holly Newman collected the assist on the
play. The goal by Morales was her 14th goal of the season for Northwest
Mississippi.
MCC answered the goal by the Lady Rangers in the 39th
minute to tie the game at 1-1. Former Clarkdale standout Kayla Phillips did the
honors for the Lady Eagles with the goal which brought her total to 12 goals
for the season.
Northwest Mississippi put the game away for good in the
final 15 minutes to come away with the 2-1 road victory over MCC. Morales
scored once again for the Lady Rangers to bring her season total to 15.
Northwest Mississippi improved to 10-4-4 with the
victory, while MCC completed the 2014 season with a 9-8-2 overall record.
Freshman Danielle Shows also received the MACJC Offensive
Player of the Week award prior Tuesday's game against Northwest. Shows earned
the honors by scoring a pair of goals last week in a 4-0 victory over Southwest
Mississippi.
