MCC Soccer Clinches Playoff Spot

The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles entered its
match with Pearl River Community College Wednesday night at C.D. Smith Field
knowing it had an opportunity to clinch a spot in the MACJC State Playoffs. The
Lady Eagles not only clinched a spot in the postseason, but did it in dramatic
fashion.
MCC scored a second half goal and held on despite a
furious effort by PRCC to earn a hard fought 2-1 victory.
The win for MCC moved its overall record to 7-7-1 and 5-3
in South Division play. The Lady Eagles still have their sights set on earning
home field for the quarterfinals of the MACJC State Playoffs. MCC will need a
pair of wins to conclude the season to earn home field for the quarterfinal
round of the playoffs which is set for October 28.
The Lady Eagles will travel to Mississippi Gulf Coast
Friday afternoon for a 4:30 match and will finish the 2014 regular season
against Southwest Mississippi next Wednesday (October 22) at 5 p.m.
MCC defeated Mississippi Gulf Coast earlier this season
4-0 and also earned a shutout over Southwest by a final of 3-0.
Pearl River took a very early 1-0 lead in the 17th
minute, but the Lady Eagles would bounce back to tie the game later in the
half. Former Clarkdale standout Kayla Phillips would score the goal on a assist
by Tori Riebock to tie the game at 1-1.
MCC would the score the go-ahead goal in the 55th minute
to secure the 2-1 win. Ashley Watts would do the honors for the Lady Eagles by
scoring the eventual game winner on an assist by Danielle Shows.
The MCC men were also action Wednesday night against
Pearl River and dropped a tough 4-1 decision at the hands of the Wildcats. The
Eagles will also return to action Friday on the road at Mississippi Gulf Coast
at 6:30 p.m. and conclude the 2014 regular season next Wednesday (October 22)
against Southwest Mississippi at 7 p.m.
