MCC golf wins Redgate Inv.


Eagles capture first win at NJCAA DI level

MERIDIAN, Miss. – Meridian Community College’s golf team entered Tuesday’s final round of the Jim Redgate Invitational with a three shot lead over two former national championship teams- Central Alabama and Darton College.

In the final round the Eagles shot a 291 team score at Briarwood Country Club to won the event by two strokes. MCC finished the event at 867 (289-287-291), breaking 300 each day, while Central Alabama claimed runner-up with a team total of 869 (288-291-290).

“After our front nine scores I knew we had to have a solid back nine to have a chance,” said MCC head coach Sean Covich. “I’m just so proud of all the guys- even the “B team” played well and what a way to win on your home course.”

This was the first NJCAA Division I tournament win in MCC history.

“This is undoubtedly the biggest win in my four years here simply because of the competition we were playing against,” said Covich.

Freshman Brant Garon earned his second consecutive all tournament team honor with his sixth consecutive even-par or better score of 71 in the final round. Garon had a 2-under-par 54 hole total, 211 (70-70-71) to place in a tie for second out of 64 golfers.

MCC individuals scores included: t2 Brandt Garon 70-70-71 (211), t10 Cory Williamson 73-69-77 (219), t10 Clemens Dvorak 72-73-74 (219), t12 Garrett Westbrook 74-75-71 (220), t16 Bo Reed 73-73-75 (221), t20 Adam Monsen 77-75-70 (222), t26 Nick Hawkes 77-70-76 (223), t46 Tanner Sparks 79-77-75 (231).

MCC will take a week off from competitive action before traveling to Alabama for the NJCAA National Championship Preview on Oct. 12-13 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail- Huntsville, AL.
