Sophomores continue unbeaten streak in Eagle Cup

(MERIDIAN) - With the Sophomores carrying a commanding 4 ½ - 1 ½ lead into the final day of the 7th Semi-Annual Eagle Cup, the Freshmen would need a miracle as six points where up for grabs at historic Northwood Country Club for the Singles Matches that would determine the Champion.

Match #3, which featured Easton Key of the “Sophomore” team against freshman Adam Monsen, would be the first match to end on Wednesday. Key would close out the match on #15 as he won 5&3 to get the Sophomores just one point away from victory.

Mere seconds later sophomore Cory Williamson would drain a birdie putt on #16 to close out freshman Bo Reed 4&2 in Match #1 which gave the Sophomores the magical 6 ½ points needed to secure the Cup for a record seventh consecutive time.

Plenty of matches were still close and out on the course as the remaining competitors played for pride in Eagle Cup VII.

Match #2 (Nick Hawkes vs Brandt Garon) and Match #5 (Tanner Sparks vs Clemens Dvorak) both ended in halves as they were All Square after 18 holes.

Clinton Hales, playing for the sophomore team defeated Oscar Mariscal 5&4.

And in perhaps what some would consider an “upset”, freshman JT Soley knocked off NJCAA All American and sophomore team captain, Garrett Westbrook 3&2, using six birdies on the back side to do so.

The final score ended up Sophomores 8 ½ to Freshmen 3 ½ . Of course talks have already started about Eagle Cup VIII coming this Spring in 2010 as the Sophomore team will look to once again continue the streak (7 in a row now…).
