Eagle Cup: Sophomores dominate Day Two

(MERIDIAN) - Once again Day Two of the seventh semi annual Eagle Cup had perfect weather and clear skies as the format featured alternate shot match play at beautiful Briarwood Country Club.

Heading into the day, the "Sophomore" team was looking to add to their 2-1 lead while the "Freshmen" team was looking to mount a comeback.

The first match of the day featured Tanner Sparks and Easton Key against Adam Monsen and Bo Reed.

Monsen/Reed grabbed an early lead for the freshmen team at 2 UP thru 5 holes but Sparks/Key took control near the turn and closed out the match on the backside, winning 3&1 which extended the sophomore team lead out to 3-1.

The second match of the day saw Clemens Dvorak and JT Soley team up for the freshman against Garrett Westbrook and Cory Williamson of the sophomore team.

Once again, the freshman duo of Dvorak/Soley grabbed an early 2 UP lead thru 3 holes but the match was ALL SQUARE after nine holes. On the backside Westbrook/Williamson took the lead and eventually closed out the match 3&2. The point earned the sophomore team a commanding 4-1 lead.

The final match of the day would serve as the most entertaining as Clinton Hales and Nick Hawkes were paired against Brandt Garon and Oscar Mariscal.

For the second consecutive day, Hales/Hawkes looked to be cruising to a victory as they were 4 UP with 5 holes to play, they were even 3 UP with 3 holes to play but Garon/Mariscal turned the tide winning 3 of the final 3 holes to end the match in a draw earning the freshman team a much needed ½ a point to avoid an all out sophomore sweep on day two. Even with the halved point, the "Freshmen" team was still down after a rough day as the Eagle Cup points stand at 4 ½ - 1 ½.

The final day of the three day Eagle Cup concludes Wednesday afternoon at Northwood Country Club. The final day will feature six different singles matches with a total of six points up for grabs. First team to 6 ½ points wins the Cup, meaning that the Freshmen need to win all but one match to win it outright- a tall task considering that the Sophomores are 6-0 All Time vs the Freshman in the six previous Eagle Cups.
