MCC Track Flies at Home Meet

From School Reports

Meridian, MS – MCC was back on the track Saturday as they hosted their annual home track meet, the MCC Relay Invitational on the campus of MCC.  The day was full of personal bests for MCC along with school records being broken and national qualifiers.

“Today was a great day for our team, from not only an individual standpoint, but also for our relay,” said Head Coach Chip Gayden.   “We really came out today and competed well, and we were more relaxed as a team with being at home and having a lot of friends and family in attendance.”

MCC got off to a hot start with the 4x100 meter relay team posting a first place finish along with breaking the school record in a time of 39.82.  The foursome of Chris Lewis, DevariusTurner, Terrance Johnson and Cravorkian Carson narrowly beat rival Hinds who finished second in 39.99.

In the short sprints, MCC didn’t disappoint the home crowd.  Ashley Henderson swept the women’s 100 meters and the 200 meters on the day.

Henderson posted a time of 11.86 in the 100 meters, almost half a second better than second place.  In the 200 meters Henderson posted a winning time of 23.98 to win the event by over a second to the nearest competitor.

In the men’s 100 meters Cravorkian Carson posted a second place finish in the 100 meters with a time of 10.62.  In the 200 meters, MCC finished second and third with Devarius Turner posting a time of 21.56 to finish second and Terrance Johnson posted a time of 21.82 to finish third.

In the 400 meters, MCC’s Dontarian Evans finished first in a time of 47.50 to break the previous school record of 47.63 previously held by Reggie Freeman from 1998.  Eric Durham placed seventh in the event with a time of 50.29.

In the distance events, MCC was able to claim the top five finishers in the 800 meters with Josh Austin, Noah Smith, Rogelio Araiza, Dustin Darby and Bryson Penton.

In the 1500 meters, MCC claimed the top three spots with Araiza, Darby, and Tyler Warren.  In the 10,000 meters for women, Esmeralda Rodriguez was able to finish first with a national qualifying mark in the event.  In the men’s 10,000 meters MCC claimed the top two finishers with William Griffin posting the win and Preston Breazeale finishing second.
