MCC Track Set to Host MCC Relays

From School Reports

Meridian, MS – MCC will host their annual home track meet the MCC Relay Invitational on Saturday with a new team added to the second year event.

Last season MCC hosted the other two community college’s in Mississippi that have track and field programs in Hinds and Coahoma.  This year the teams scheduled to compete include MCC, Hinds, Coahoma, and NAIA school William Carey out of Hattiesburg, MS.

“This is turning in to a great event on our schedule, especially with the opportunity for our team to compete in front of a home crowd for a change,” said Head Coach Chip Gayden.  “We are always trying to make sure we can make this a spectator friendly event when it comes to the time frame and I believe we do it well, with the meet lasting about 4 hours.”

The MCC Relay Invitational will have some marquee events on the track this Saturday and it will start early at 12:20 p.m. with the 4x100 meter relay which will feature the number one and number three teams in the NJCAA in the event in Hinds and MCC.

Two other sprint events will be must see events on Saturday including the 100 meters and 200 meters for both men and women.  In the 100 meters for women, MCC will see the outdoor debut of Ashley Henderson who finished 6th at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships in the 60 meters.

On the men’s side Cravorkian Carson will look to improve on his time of 10.56 which won the event at the MC Twilight last Friday.  In the 200 meters for the women, Henderson will look to pick up right where she left off during the indoor season which saw her finish runner-up at the NJCAA National Championships.  On the men’s side, MCC will put Chris Lewis, Terrance Johnson and Devarius Turner on the track.

In the distance events, MCC will compete in both men’s and women’s 10,000 meters, the men’s 1500 meters and the men’s 800 meters.

The MCC Relay Invitational will begin Saturday with the men’s 10,000 meters beginning at 11:00 a.m. and the final event the 4x400 meter relay beginning at 4:00.  Admission is free.
