MCC Tennis Takes Wins at Home

The Meridian Community College women's tennis team extended their winning record to 18-2 today with a 5-4 win at MCC’s home courts over Snead State CC from Boaz, Alabama. Meridian was down 2-1 after doubles play.  Meridian’s dynamic duo of Paige Gibson/Shelby Zachry came from behind 6-3 to win the number one doubles 8-6.  The number two doubles team of Jordyn Hull/Alden Hartley dropped a 5-2 lead and lost 8-6.  

The three doubles, Miller/Jami Daugherty fought from 7-4 down to tie the match at 6-6 but fell 8-6.  Jordyn Hull at four singles clinched the first single’s win for MCC with a win over Olivia Sharpton 6-3, 6-4 to tie the match at 2-2.  

Hayden Hill lost her match at three singles to Alexis Daniels 6-3, 6-0, and Paige Gibson fell to Alicia Triplett at one singles 7-6(4), 6-0.  Shelby Zachry picked up the win over KB Bole 7-5, 6-3 to put the match score at 3 (MCC) 4 (Snead).  Kyra Holway, playing down in the lineup due to injury, picked up the win at five singles over Hannah Mathis 6-1, 6-1 to tie the score at 4-4. Taylor Miller clinched the win in the last match of the day at number six singles 6-4, 6-3 against Morgan Thompson, who was undefeated on the year.  

On Friday both the men’s and women’s teams hosted Northwest Community College and Northeast Community College at Northeast Park. Both teams picked up the two wins on the day. The men stretched their team record to 20-2 on the season.  Their only losses were to number three ranked Tyler Community College and number eighth ranked Collin County Community College.  

The men playing without two starters defeated Northwest Mississippi CC 8-1. The only loss came at three singles with Sean Grice playing in for Noah James against NWMCC’s Dalton Young. Grice lost 3, 0.  Pimenta won one singles 0,0.  Goncalves picked up the win at two 1, 0. Sam Butler, playing number four defeated Zak Harbin 2.4.  

At five singles, Will Irvin defeated Thomas Hall 1, 2.  Finishing out the singles at six, Nathan Hollis defeated Luke Wilson 1, 0.  Meridian one the one doubles 8-0, the two doubles 8-4, and the three doubles 8-6.  The women defeated Northwest 9-0.  The women lost only thirteen games in all six singles matches. 

In doubles play, Gibson/Zachry won 8-2.  Hull/Hartley won 8-0, and Daugherty/Miller won 8-4.  

In the second match of the day, Meridian’s women won 8-1 with the only loss coming at three singles with Brittany Allen subbing in for Kyra Holway.  

Allen played a tremendous match but lost in a third set tiebreak 12-10. Meridian’s singles players only gave up 2 games in the other five singles matches.bMeridian won all three doubles by scores of 8-1, 8-5, and 8-0.  In men’s action against Northeast, Meridian won 9-0. Meridian’s singles players gave up only four games in twelve sets.  In doubles, the one team won 8-0, the two team won 8-2, and the three team won 8-0.

Meridian will travel to Perkinston on Monday to play Gulf Coast CC in a 1:00 match at Perkinston campus. MCC will be on the road again on Tuesday to travel to Raymond, MS for a match against Hinds. Meridian will finish the regular season with a road trip on Friday to take on Itawamba and then on Saturday, Meridian plays host at Northeast Park to Jones County Junior College in an eleven o’clock match.  April 16 will be the last regular match of the season and Sophomore Day
