MCC Baseball Rolls Past Spring Hill

The Meridian Community College baseball team stepped out of
conference action on Monday afternoon by playing host to Spring Hill College in
a doubleheader at Scaggs Field. The Eagles had no troubles in the twin bill by
defeating Spring Hill in Game One by a final of 11-1 and blowing past the Badgers
in Game Two by a final count of 15-3. MCC improved to 30-8 overall for the 2016
season with the two non-conference wins on Monday afternoon against Spring
Hill. MCC will return to action this Saturday with a pair of key conference
games at Scaggs Field against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College
beginning at 1p.m.
MCC built a 4-0 lead after two innings of play in Game One
on Monday against the Badgers and never looked back in taking the 11-1 run-rule
shortened victory. MCC finished the opening game of the twin bill with 10 total
hits and Eason Weeks led the way at the plate with two hits. Weeks had the
biggest blow of the game for MCC with a three-run homer, while sophomore Matt
Berler added a solo shot in the victory.
Jaylon Keys drove in a pair of runs on two base hits, while
Chase Coker drove in three runs for the Eagles on one base hit. Nate Romans
also added a two-run single, while Dalton Smith and Baylor Obert each added one
hit apiece. Sophomore Drew Smith earned the pitching win on the mound in Game
One for MCC by working four innings and collecting two strikeouts. Freshman
Orin Myrick also pitched a scoreless fifth inning out of the bullpen in Game
One for the Eagles.
MCC carried the momentum of the opening game over into Game
Two by cruising past Spring Hill by a final of 15-3 and the second was also cut
short by the run-rule. Freshman catcher Blake Fields was the star of Game Two
for the Eagles by driving in seven runs and six of those runs crossed the plate
on a pair of towering home runs. Luke Craig also had a home run in the victory
and finished the game by driving in a pair of runs for the Eagles. Nate Romans
added two singles and Matt Berler picked up an RBI on a single for MCC. Trace
Hamby joined the hit parade for the green and white with an RBI single, while
Eason Weeks drove in one run on a sacrifice fly.
Freshman Carter Sims was credited with the pitching win for
the Eagles by working two innings and surrendering two earned runs. Freshman
Bukhari Brown pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen and Freshman
Coleman Gilder also notched one inning out of the MCC bullpen.
