MCC Baseball Sweeps Past BRCC

The Meridian Community College Eagles entered Miss-Lou
Conference play this weekend riding high on a five-game winning streak and
things continued to roll in the right direction for the green and white. MCC
secured a doubleheader sweep (10-4, 4-2) over Baton Rouge Community College to
push its current winning streak to seven games. The Eagles improved to 16-12
overall with the sweep and 2-0 in conference play, while BRCC is now 12-21
overall and 0-2 in league play.
The two teams will meet for the final game of its series
Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
MCC banged out 15 hits in the opening game of the twin bill
to win by a final score of 10-4. All nine hitters in the MCC lineup had at
least one hit in the six-run victory. Brooks Balisterri led the way with a game-high
three hits, but Game One ultimately belonged to the Meridian right fielder.
Michael Druhan had a career day at the plate in the 10-4 victory with a pair of
home runs and four RBI’s. Druhan connected on a three-run home run in the
second inning and later added a solo home run in the fourth inning. Sophomore
catcher Kevin Hall added a solo home run in the game, while Scott Votaw had a
two-run single.
Bryant Johnston picked up the pitching win in relief by
working 4 1/3 innings and collecting seven strikeouts.
The second game of the doubleheader ended in dramatic
fashion as MCC scored four runs in the final two innings to walk away with a
4-2 victory over Baton Rouge. The Eagles entered the bottom of the sixth
trailing BRCC 2-0 and the home team was able to scratch two runs to tie the
game at 2-2. The first run crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Hall
and Mac Seibert tied the game with two outs on a single to right field.
MCC would finish the game off in the bottom of the seventh
inning thanks to a walk-off home run by Scott Votaw. Dalton Thomas reached
first base on a two-out single and Votaw delivered the long homer to left field
to give MCC the comeback victory.
MCC finished Game Two with seven hits and Baton Rouge had
five hits in the loss.
Kellon Hibbard picked up the pitching win out of the bullpen
for MCC by working a scoreless seventh inning. The star of the day on the mound
was Josh Curtis who pitched 5 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. Curtis allowed no
runs, one hit, one walk, and collected six strikeouts in his superb
performance.
