MCC Tennis Sweeps Past JCJC

The Meridian Community College tennis teams returned to the win column Thursday with wins over Jones County Junior College.

Meridian’s women took a 5-4 victory.  Jones County’s Anna Ready/Jenna Hegwood defeated Meridian’s Mallory Davis/Jenni Smith 8-3.  They also took wins at number one singles with Ready defeating Davis 6-1, 6-0, Krissy Stutts defeating Caroline Terry at number four singles 6-4, 6-3, and Brooke Martin defeating Taylor White 6-2, 6-2.  

For Meridian, Madison Gillette/Molly Davis took a win over Brenda Hegwood/Brooke Martin 9-7 while Taylor White and Caroline Terry took a win at three doubles 9-7.  In single’s Meridian picked up wins at number two singles when JenniSmith defeated Jenna Hegwood 7-6(8), 6-2, Madison Gillette defeated Brenda Hegwood 6-1, 6-2 at number three doubles, and Molly Davis pulled out a win at number five singles with a win over Elizabeth Wright 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.  

Meridian’s women are 7-8 after losing to number four ranked St. Petersburg, FL, number five ranked State College of Florida, and number 12 ranked Florida State College of Florida during spring break.  The women are 6-1 in conference play.  

In men’s action Meridian took an 8-1 victory.  Meridian won all courts except the number three singles.  Chris Malletter(Meridian) lost to Josiah Liam in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.  Meridian won the doubles courts 8-3, 9-8(0), 8-1.  In singles, Millet took court 1 over Lightsey 6-4, 6-4.  At court 2, Will Rogers defeated Eric Swisher 6-7(4), 6-3, 12-10; the number four singles player Judson Watson wone 6-4, 6-2 over Ryan Young.  Reed Wade defeated Robert Kiewit 6-2, 7-5 at number five singles, and Christian Jackson defeated Jones’ Caleb Byrd 6-1, 6-0.  Meridian’s men are 4-5 on the season and undefeated in conference play.  

Both teams return to play Friday at Mississippi Gulf Coast at 3:00 p.m. Meridian’s women will host Seminole State, Oklahoma on Saturday at Northeast Tennis Center at 10:00 a.m.
