-Eagles seek record fourth win in fall semester

(MERIDIAN) - The Meridian Community College golf team returns to action Monday in Alex City, AL at Willow Point Golf and Country Club for the NJCAA District IV Preview.

The Eagles are fresh off their third victory in four starts this fall and roll into Alabama as the third ranked team in the country. MCC tied a school record for most wins in the fall last week by capturing the Lake Caroline Collegiate Invitational by 14 stokes over the University of Texas-Tyler.

12 teams from six states will be participating in the Preview, including six of the top ten ranked teams in NJCAA Division I men’s golf.

Central Alabama is hosting the event which includes Wallace State (AL), Meridian (MS), Cape Fear (NC), Darton (GA), Brevard (FL), Mississippi Gulf Coast, Faulkner State (AL), and Andrew College (GA). University of South Carolina-Lancaster, Tri-County (GA) College and Spartanburg Methodist (SC) College are also in the event.

“District IV is loaded with great teams from Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina,” said MCC head golf coach, Sean Covich.

“This is a very tough district- maybe the best in all of NJCAA golf, but I feel like we play pretty good golf here in Meridian, Mississippi so the guys look forward to the opportunity of representing MCC at this event.”

Sophomore team captain, Clemens Dvorak, will lead MCC into the Preview. Dvorak is coming of a third place finish at the Lake Caroline Collegiate Invitational last week.

Joining Dvorak will be sophomore Brandt Garon. Garon, the defending NJCAA national champion, has already posted six scores of Even par or better in just nine rounds this semester.

Three freshmen complete the five man line-up for Coach Covich as Meridian native, former Lamar High School standout, Easton Key will join Jake Stirling and Alex Grannon.

The Eagles are paired with tournament host, Central Alabama and Cape Fear out of North Carolina for the first day.

Play gets underway Monday at 8:00 am and will feature 36 holes, Tuesday’s final round will feature 18 holes.

Team Champion, Team Runner-up, Medalist and five All Tournament Team players will be honored following play.
