MCC Tennis Players Qualify for National Small College Championships
Meridian Community College women’s tennis players, Jessica Halterman and Savannah Zachry, have qualified to compete in the 2010 National Small College Championships to be held in Mobile, AL on Oct. 13-17.
The tournament brings in the top eight singles players and the top eight doubles teams from the NAIA, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NJCAA together to compete.
Halterman and Zachry were selected as “At-Large” delegates due to the fact that the women’s draw only had seven regions completing. A tournament committee made up of the men’s and women’s national ranking chairs and members of the ITA Board of Directors selected the alternate teams (two) from seven finalist from the regional tournaments.
MCC competed in the Southeast Regional ITA in September. Halterman and Zachry were finalists in that tournament losing to the team from Georgia Perimeter 8-6.
The Lady Eagles will depart from campus Wednesday to participate. This is the fifth consecutive year that MCC has had players to qualify for the National Small College Championships.
MCC tennis alumnus, Lucio Cangiano, who played for the Eagles in 200-2010, recently won the single’s division for the Central Region NCAA DII schools and will also compete in Mobile. Cangiano is presently pursuing his degree and playing tennis for Metro State in Denver, Colorado.
