Lady Eagles sweep Rush Invitational

(Meridian, MS) - The 2010 MCC/Rush Soccer Tournament kicked off Friday afternoon at C.D. Smith Field as MCC welcomed three visiting teams to campus.

Both days of the tournament featured four games.

Friday afternoon Hinds Community College out of Raymond, MS faced Gordon College out of Barnesville, GA in the first game of the tournament.

Lady Eagles of Hinds defeated Gordon soundly, by a score of 6-1.

Game two featured the Eagles from Hinds versus the Highlanders of Gordon. Much like their women's team, the men from Hinds handled Gordon with ease, winning 3-0.

MCC took to the field in game three as the high flying Lady Eagles looked to stay undefeated against Lon Morris College out of Jacksonville, TX.

MCC got on the board first thanks to a goal from sophomore Kelsey Edwards who scored in the 35th minute of the first half to put the Lady Eagles up 1-0. Edwards was assisted by sophomore Britney Reed.

In the second half, Lon Morris scored to tie up the game in the 50th minute.

Late in the game, the 87th minute, Edwards scored her second goal off an assist from sophomore Anastasia Vogel to give the Lady Eagles a 2-1 victory over Lon Morris.

MCC's women improved their record to 7-0-1 and as they continued into Saturday’s action undefeated.

Friday's nightcap featured the men of MCC vs Lon Morris.

Eagle sophomore Valentino Fogo scored in the 22nd minute to give MCC an early 1-0 lead. Lon Morris then came right back and tied it up at 1-1 in 27th min.

Lon Morris scored again right before halftime to take a 2-1 lead.

Lon Morris then scored two goals in the second half to pull away from MCC, despite another goal from Eagle sophomore Fogo.

LMC defeated MCC 4-2 as MCC's men fell to 3-5-1 on the season.

Saturday’s first game featured Hinds Community College against Lon Morris College.

The women from LMC defeated Hinds 3-2.

The men from both schools then played in the second game on Saturday.

Hinds' men defeated LMC 4-2.

The undefeated Lady Eagles of MCC took the field against Gordon College out of Georgia in the third game on Saturday.

Sophomore Anastasia Vogel scored the first three goals for MCC, two in the first half and one in the second half to earn a hat trick and lead MCC to a 5-0 victory.

Vogel ended the game with three goals and one assist. Sophomore Kelsey Edwards added two goals and two assists in the shutout victory for MCC.

The Lady Eagles remained undefeated and improved to 8-0-1 on the season. Their next regular season contest with be against Hinds Community College in Meridian on Oct 18.

MCC's men faced Gordon in the final game of the Rush Tournament.

Gordon went up 1-0 early in the first half, Eagle sophomore Leon Powell then tied the game at 1-1 just before halftime.

Gordon added a goal to take a 2-1 lead in the second half.

Eagle sophomore Valentino Fogo then tied the game at 2-2 thanks to an assist from Powell.

MCC then took the lead when a corner kick from freshman Brandon Bowen was headed in by Powell for his second goal to put the Eagles up 3-2.

Fogo then scored on an assist from Powell on the next possession for MCC to give the Eagles a 4-2 victory over Gordon.

MCC’s men improved to 4-5-1 on the season.
