MCC Golf captures Lake Caroline Collegiate


Only Juco in field wins by 14 shots, Four Eagles named to All Tournament Team

(MADISON) - The Meridian Community College golf team shot a final round 294 to pull away from the field at the Lake Caroline Collegiate Invitational played in Madison.

The Eagles were 14 shots clear of runners-up the University of Texas-Tyler. Shorter University came in third, while Faulkner University came in fourth and Spring Hill College rounded out the top five. 14 teams representing six states were participating, 13 of the 14 schools were NCAA or NAIA four year university programs, MCC was the only two year college.

The victory was MCC's third of the season, which ties their total from last year.

"We're off to a great start, winning three of the first four," said fifth year head coach Sean Covich.

"But we have a two big events the next two weeks versus the top junior colleges from across the nation, so we'll see how good we are then."

Individually sophomore Clemens Dvorak led the way for MCC at Lake Caroline Golf Club with a 1-over par 145 (72-73). Dvorak claimed third place out of the field of 83 players.

Fellow sophomore Brandt Garon was one shot behind Dvorak, with a 2-over 146 (72-74). Garon also registered a top five finish with fourth place.

Freshman Easton Key shot 4-over 148 (73-75), while fellow freshmen Jake Stirling also finished 4-over with a 148 (76-72). Key and Striling finished in a tie for fifth.

Sophomore Oscar Mariscal rounded out MCC's scoring with 12-over 156 (74-82). Mariscal finished in a tie for 22nd.

Dvorak, Garon, Key, and Stirling were all named to the All Tournament Team, along with UT-Tyler’s Paul Aube and Shorter’s Arvid Bengtsson. Aube and Bengtsson tied for first with even par 144.

The Eagles return to action next Mon-Tues in Alex City, AL for the NJCAA District IV Preview at Willow Point Golf Club.
