Corky Palmer to highlight MCC Baseball Alumni Weekend

(MERIDIAN) - The Meridian Community College baseball program has announced that former MCC head coach Corky Palmer will be the guest speaker at the Eagle’s Baseball Alumni Game Dinner on October 16 at the Quality Inn Ballroom.

Coach Palmer coached the Eagles to a 409-160 record from 1987-1996 and lead the team to the 1996 Junior College World Series finals. In 1997, Palmer was hired to coach at Southern Miss. He led the team to its first Conference USA title in 2003, winning Conference Coach of the Year honors. The school set a new record for wins at 47-16. Six years later, he led them to the 2009 College World Series in Omaha, their first time in the CWS.

"It is a privilege to have Coach Palmer back at the Alumni Game," head coach Chris Curry said.

"Coach Palmer brought MCC baseball to national prominence and is a big reason why our program garners the respect that it does. It will be a great opportunity for our alumni and friends to re-connect with Coach Palmer and each other."

Coach Curry also said that former MCC head coach Scott Berry is planning to attend the alumni baseball game that afternoon.

"To have both Coach Palmer and Coach Berry at the alumni baseball game is an honor for MCC Baseball. It just seems right that Coach Palmer and Coach Berry be there."

The MCC Baseball Alumni Game will be held the same day (Saturday, October 16) at Scaggs Field on the MCC campus. The events will begin with registration at 11 a.m., Home Run Derby at noon and Alumni Game at 1:30.

The Alumni game format will include a nine-inning game between Alumni members (even numbered years vs. odd numbered years).

The weekend will wrap up with Palmer as the guest speaker for the Alumni Dinner at the Quality Inn Ballroom at 6:30 p.m.

For more information on the game and the dinner please contact MCC head baseball coach Chris Curry at ccurry1@meridiancc.edu or call (601) 484-8670.
