MCC Tennis Sweeps Past Gulf Coast

The Meridian Community College tennis teams hosted
Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in matches on Monday at Northeast
Tennis Center. In men’s action, the duo of Jason Pimenta/Will Swindoll won 8-6
against Travis Bell/John Teague Murphy. At number two doubles, Meridian’s
dynamic duo Breno Goncalves/Callan Shinall defeated Noah Tippen/Noah Rowell
8-1.
At three doubles, Noah James/John Taylor Champion won a
close match 9-8((6) over Brett Bowen/Reid Cudd. Meridian’s men holding a 3-0
lead after doubles won the first five courts before Will Irvin fell at number
six singles to Reid Cudd 6-2, 6-3. At number one singles, Jason Pimenta cruised
past Travis Bell 2, 2. At number two singles, John Teague Murphy forfeited 0, 0
to Breno Goncalves. Will Swindoll pulled off a good win over Noah Rowell 6-4,
6-3. Callan Shinall breezed to any easy first set 6-2 over Noah Tippen but
fought hard to pull off the second set 7-6 (0). At five singles, Noah James won
easily against Brett Bowen 1, 1. The men are now 5-0 against JUCO play and 6-1
overall.
In ladies action it was an up and down day. Meridian’s
women’s number one doubles Shelby Zachry/Jordyn Hull lost to the team of
Paulina Estrada/Bianca Buie 8-0. The two doubles team of Rachel Sollie/Taylor
Miller defeated Katie Burrall/Kaci Calhoun 8-3. Kyra Holway/Micah Gray pulled
out a close win at three doubles 8-6. MCC’s women led 2-1 after doubles but
singles play was going to determine the winner. Meridian lost at number one
when Zachry fell to Estrada 0,1. Hull fell to Buie 0.0. With MGCCC up 3-2 at
this point, the bottom half of MCC’s lineup went to work.
Kyra Holway, who is just returning from gall bladder
surgery, played a nearly three-hour match to defeat Katie Burrall in three sets
by a score of 6-2, 6-7 (0), 10-8. Taylor Miller took control of her court from
the start and won 2, 1 by defeating Jasmine Sartin. Rachel Sollie also took
care of business early defeating Sara McMillan 6-4, 6-1. With the match, still
undecided as Holway and the number six singles player for MCC, Micah Gray, were
still on the court, Micah Gray staged the biggest comeback of the day. Micah lost
her first set 6-7. Down 4-1 in the second, the freshman settled in and went to
work. Micah came back from down 4-1 to win the second set in a tiebreaker 7-6.
Micah won the third set tiebreak 10-5 to give Meridian a 6-3 decision.
The Lady Eagles are now 4-0 in JUCO play and 4-2
overall. Both teams will be on the road Thursday for a double match with
Northeast CC at 9:00 a.m. at New Albany; they will then travel to Fulton, MS,
to take on Itawamba. On Friday, both teams travel to Perkinston to play Eastern
Florida men and women at 11:00 a.m.
