MCC Tennis Dominates Weekend Play

The Meridian Community College men and women's tennis squads
continued to dominate over the weekend with two matches played. Friday,
Meridian traveled to Wallace State CC in Hanceville, AL, who is reinstating
their program after ten-years without a program. Meridian's women won the
match 9-0 and probably played some of the best tennis that they have played.
In girl's doubles, the one doubles team of Jordyn Hull/Shelby Zachry
defeated Emily Graves/Kelsi Wilson 8-4 ; at two doubles, Rachel Sollie and
Taylor Miller defeated Tempie Ennis Molly Whitlock 8-4 ; and at three doubles
Meridian picked up a forfeit. In singles, Shelby Zachry defeated Emily
Graves 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 ; Jordyn Hull picked up the win at two singles by
defeating Nikki Rakestraw 6-0, 7-5 . The number three singles player Kyra
Holway, who is recovering from recent surgery, picked up a hard-fought victory
in three sets by defeating Kelsi Wilson 4-6, 6-4, 10-5; at four singles Taylor
Miller won over Tempie Ennis 6-2, 6-3. At five singles Rachel Sollie had
no trouble picking up the victory over Molly Whitlock 6-1, 6-1. The six
singles was also a forfeit as Micah Gray picked up the victory there.
Meridian' women are 2-2 on the season.
In men's action, the number one doubles team of Will
Swindoll/Jason Pimenta never got in sync and fell to by a score of 8-2 to Clint
Watson/Donnie Camp. Callan Shinall/Breno Goncalves picked up the win at
two doubles by defeating Cade Preshell/Hunter Manley 8-4. At three
doubles, Noah James/John Taylor Champion lost to Toddne Stallworth/Luke Bowden
8-3. Nathan Hollis/Will Irvin picked up an 8-5 win. Meridian's men redeemed
themselves in clearing all the singles courts. Jason Pimenta picked up
the easy win over Preshell 0, 0/ . At two singles, Breno Goncalves
defeated Clint Watson 3, 4.. At three singles, Will Swindoll won over
Donnie Camp 3, 4. At four singles Noah James won in two sets over Toddne
Stallworth 6-2, 7-6.. Callan Shinall picked up the win at five singles by
defeating Hunter Manley 0,2 , and teammate, Will Irvin closed out the day for
Meridian with a victory over Damon Calvert 7-5, 6-3. John Taylor Champion,
Nate Hollis, and Federico Hourdebaigt picked up wins as well.
In Sunday action, Meridian's men defeated the defending DIII
National Champions, Oxford Emory 8-1. Jason Pimenta/Will Swindoll defeated
Guillermo Cabral 8-4. Meridian's Callan Shinall/Breno Goncalves cruised
to an 8-2 win over Gordon Hua/Akshay Raghuram. The three doubles team,
Noah James/John Taylor Champion defeated Henry Hua/Geoffrey Yang 8-1. In
men's singles, Jason Pimenta plaid an outstanding match to defeat Guillermo
Cabral 1, 2. At two singles, Breno Goncalves defeated Michael Pioso 3, 1.
Will Swindoll won over Gordon Hua 1, 4. The only loss of the day
came at four singles when Noah James fell to Henry Hua in three sets 2-6, 6-2,
10-7. Callan Shinall got pushed to three sets by Akshay Raghuram but won
6-4, 4-6, 10-5. At six singles, Will Irvin defeated Geoffrey Yang 5-4,
6-2. Nathan Hollis picked up a win as well with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Nico
Hasty. Meridian's men are now 4-1 on the season with their only loss
coming to DII University of West Alabama.
Meridian's men and women will return to action on Wednesday, Feb.
15 when they travel to Raymond to play Hinds CC at 2:00 pm.
