MCC Basketball Falls to Southwest
From School Reports
Meridian Community College celebrated its annual homecoming
on Thursday night at the Graham Gymnasium against Southwest Mississippi
Community College, but the celebration didn’t go as planned for the home team.
The Southwest women started the night by earning a 57-47 victory over the Lady
Eagles and the Southwest men closed the night out by defeating the Eagles by a
final count of 90-80. The MCC women fell to 8-11 overall and 2-8 in MACJC South
Division action, while the MCC men are now 2-16 overall and 0-10 in league
play. MCC will return to action this Monday with a conference road trip at
Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. The women will play at 5:30 and the
men will follow at 7:30.
The Lady Eagles kept things close for much of the game
against the Lady Bears on Thursday night, but couldn’t close the deal to fall
by a final score of 57-47. Freshman Qiayon Bailey led MCC in scoring with 13
points off the bench, while Mary Maxell followed with 10 points. Freshman
Shannon Tate also chipped in the eight points off the bench for MCC in the
setback.
The MCC men only trailed by two points at the end of the
first half, but the momentum turned in the second half as Southwest rolled away
with a 90-80 victory. Sophomore Timothy Patton led MCC in scoring with 22
points, while former Southeast Lauderdale star Johnny Knox followed with 17
points. DJ Mitchell finished the night with 11 points and Zachary Scales
chipped in with nine points for the Eagles.
