MCC Baseball Walks Away With Sweep Over PRCC

The Meridian Community College Eagles returned to action on Thursday with a conference doubleheader against Pearl River Community College trying to get back in the race for the top spot in the MACJC standings. MCC walked away with a pair of dramatic victories over Pearl River by final scores of 9-8 and 6-5 to sweep the season set against the Wildcats.

MCC improved to 23-10 overall with the doubleheader sweep and 11-5 in conference action. MCC will take a few days off for the Easter weekend and will return to action on April 8 when it will play host to rival East Central Community College. The doubleheader is set for a 4 p.m. first pitch at Scaggs Field.

MCC needed 10 innings in the opening game against the Wildcats, but Goose Yates delivered an RBI on a sacrifice fly to give the Eagles a 9-8 victory. Yates finished Game One by going 3-for-4 with three RBI’s after being named the MACJC Player of Week on Tuesday. MCC finished the game with 17 hits as a team and every player in the lineup for the Eagles had at least one hit in Game One.

Former West Lauderdale star Daniel Hill finished the game by going 3-for-5 with three RBI’s and Jared Savell also collected three hits for the Eagles. Michael Druhan and Matt Berler also had two hits apiece, while Dustin Smith added a three-run homer.

Bryant Johnston picked up the pitching victory for MCC in relief by working in the final two innings for the green and white.

MCC would also walk away with another dramatic victory in Game Two by scoring a run on a bases loaded walk to grab the 6-5 victory. Matt Berler picked up the RBI on the bases loaded walk for the Eagles. MCC managed six hits in the game and three of those hits came in the final inning for the home team. Goose Yates led the way in Game Two with a pair of base hits and Dalton Thomas had a three-run homer as well.

Bryant Johnston also picked up the win in Game Two by working in the seventh inning in relief of starter Josh Rich.
