MCC Baseball Stays Hot With Sweep of Southwest

The Meridian Community College Eagles closed out its long
home stand on Saturday afternoon with yet another conference doubleheader at
Scaggs Field. The Eagles took care of business in grand fashion by sweeping
Southwest Mississippi Community College by final scores of 8-6 and 5-2 on a
chilly afternoon on the diamond. MCC improved to 20-9 overall with the sweep
and moved to 8-4 in conference play. MCC also closed the week by winning four
straight heading into its next conference doubleheader which will be on the
road at East Mississippi Community College. The games are scheduled for this
Tuesday at East Mississippi with the first pitch slated for 4 p.m.
MCC needed plenty of offense in Game One on Saturday against
Southwest to win by a final count of 8-6. The Eagles finished Game One with 11
hits as a team, while the Bears had eight total hits. Sophomore Dalton Thomas
led the charge by going 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI’s, while former West
Lauderdale product Daniel Hill added a pair of runs scored and two base hits.
Jaylon Keys and Dustin Smith each added two hits and an RBI apiece in the
two-run victory.
Former Clarkdale star Jonathan Porter (1-0) picked up the
pitching victory in relief by working three innings and collecting one
strikeout.
MCC completed the sweep in Game Two by defeating the Bears
by a final count of 5-2. Thomas had the hot bat in Game Two for the Eagles by
smashing a three-run homer which led his team at the plate. Michael Druhan had
one of the five Meridian hits in Game Two with an RBI single and Daniel Hill
also picked up an RBI on a fielder’s choice in the Game Two victory.
Freshman Josh Rich (4-2) notched the pitching victory in
Game Two by working 4 1/3 innings and collecting a pair of strikeouts. Freshman
Cade Noble worked the rest of the game from the MCC bullpen and also had two
strikeouts.
