MCC Baseball Sweeps Past Spring Hill

The Meridian Community College baseball team returned to
Scaggs Field Monday to play host to Spring Hill College in a doubleheader that
would start a very busy home schedule this week for the team. MCC came away
with a doubleheader sweep over the Badgers by final scores of 9-0 and 11-9.
MCC improved to 16-8 overall with the home doubleheader
sweep over Spring Hill College. The Eagles will return to action Tuesday
afternoon by playing host to Itawamba Community College in a key MACJC contest
at 1 p.m. The two schools will play one seven-inning game on Tuesday afternoon
which was postponed due to weather back on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles will
then play four more conference games to conclude its seven-game home schedule
for this week. MCC will play host to Northeast Mississippi on Wednesday
afternoon in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. and will play Southwest Mississippi on
Saturday in a twin bill at 2 p.m.
MCC got a solid pitching performance in Game One of the
doubleheader sweep of Spring Hill from freshman Cade Noble to notch the 9-0
victory. Noble tossed five shutout innings and collected a pair of strikeouts
in his first collegiate victory. Sophomore Josh Curtis pitched the final two
innings for the Eagles and collected one strikeout. MCC had 13 hits as a team
in Game One, while Spring Hill only managed five hits in the setback.
Matt Berler, Michael Druhan, Goose Yates, Dustin Smith, and
Andrew Crook each finished the game with two hits apiece. Berler led the way
with a pair of doubles, while Goose Yates smashed a solo homer in the victory.
Kyle Bayles also added an RBI single, while Jared Savell and Dalton Thomas each
added a base hit.
MCC had to battle back from a big deficit in Game Two to
take an 11-9 victory to secure the sweep over the Badgers. MCC trailed 9-4
heading to the late stage of the game and the bats came alive with seven late
runs to give MCC the comeback win. Jaylon Keys tied the game in the bottom of
the sixth inning on a two-run double and Eason Weeks put the Eagles up for good
with an RBI single. MCC finished Game Two with 14 hits overall, while Spring
Hill had seven hits in the loss.
Keys finished the game by driving in four runs for Meridian
and Weeks also drove in three runs in the game on a pair of base hits. Druhan
added an RBI double in the sixth inning which scored the final run of the game
for MCC and Trace Hamby had a solid game with three base hits.
Freshman Drew Smith picked up his first collegiate pitching
win in relief by working the final three innings for the green and white.
