MCC Upsets ICC
From School Reports
The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles opened play
Monday afternoon in the first round of the MACJC State Tournament in Wesson, MS
with a huge task of taking on Itawamba Community College. The Lady Eagles made
the tournament as the fourth seed after defeating Pearl River Community College
last Thursday night at the Graham Gymnasium and the Lady Indians were a heavy favorite
to potentially make a run to the final round of the tournament after winning
the MACJC North Division crown.
MCC had other plans on Monday and pulled an enormous
upset in the opening game of the tournament by defeating ICC by a final score
of 76-74. The Lady Eagles had previously lost two games during the regular
season at the hands of Itawmaba before Monday's game at the Mullen Gymnasium.
The two teams swapped the lead down the stretch, but a pair of missed free
throws in the final seconds by the Lady Indians would prove to be the
difference.
MCC finished the game by shooting 47.6 percent from the
floor and was able to out rebound the Lady Indians by a 39-38 margin. The Lady
Eagles were able to dominate in the paint once again as Miaya Crowder secured
another double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Tytianna Hall
had one of her biggest games of the season by leading the way in the scoring
department for the Lady Eagles with 22. Sophomore Londyn Thomas also had
another solid performance for the green and white with 15 points.
MCC will now advance to the semi-final round of the MACJC
State Tournament on Wednesday at 1 p.m. against East Central Community College.
The Lady Eagles were swept during the regular season by the Lady Warriors in
two meetings. East Central opened the tournament Wednesday afternoon by
defeating Holmes Community College in convincing fashion by a final score of
90-69. East Central made the tournament as the number two seed from the MACJC
South Division.
