MCC Softball Splits Final Day of Rush Tournament

The Meridian Community College softball team concluded play Saturday in the 2015 Rush Invitational Tournament at Tommy McDonald Field. The Lady Eagles came away with a doubleheader split (1-8, 15-7) against Itawamba and Central Alabama to finish play in the annual event.

MCC (3-9) will return to action Tuesday afternoon for a road doubleheader at Baton Rouge Community College beginning at 3 p.m.

The Lady Eagles opened the tournament Saturday morning by falling to Itawamba by a final score of 8-1. MCC took its only lead of the opening game with a run in bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Lexie Butler to give MCC a 1-0 advantage. Itawamba came roaring back with eight runs in the final three innings to take the seven-run victory in Game One.

MCC finished Game One with five total hits, while the Lady Indians checked in with six hits. Shelby Peavey led the way at the plate for MCC with a pair of hits and a run scored in the loss, while Montana Holyfield and Zoie LaVergne each added a base hit.

Angel Thornton suffered the loss on the mound for MCC by working six innings and allowing three earned runs.

The Lady Eagles rebounded in Game Two with a very impressive 15-7 victory over Central Alabama Community College. MCC erased an early 5-2 deficit to run away with the run-rule victory over CACC. Holyfield and LeVergne led the way with three hits apiece in the victory. Peavey collected four RBI's, two hits, and three runs scored for the Lady Eagles in Game Two. Paige Gibson, Cassi Dew, and Josie Anderson each finished with two hits apiece in the offensive showcase for MCC. The Lady Eagles finished Game Two with 18 total hits, while Central Alabama had only five hits.

LaVergne picked up the pitching win on the mound for MCC in Game Two. LaVergne allowed seven runs (two earned), two walks, and collected a pair of strikeouts.
