MCC Baseball Sweeps Past Wallace Selma
From School Reports
The Meridian Community College baseball team returned to
action Wednesday afternoon by traveling to Wallace-Selma Community College for
a doubleheader against the Patriots. The Eagles recorded its first doubleheader
sweep (11-0, 2-1) of the season behind a pair of solid pitching performances.
MCC improved to 5-3 overall and will return to action Friday afternoon to open
a short four-game home stand at Scaggs Field. MCC will take on Baton Rouge
Community College in a doubleheader Friday afternoon beginning at 2 p.m. and
then will play host to Coahoma Community College Saturday afternoon in a twin
bill slated for 2 p.m.
MCC used a great day at the plate in Game One from
sophomore Dalton Thomas and solid pitching from Jake Smith to take an 11-0
victory. Thomas smashed two home runs in the game and both long shots came in
the same inning for Eagles which marks only the second time in school history
that a player has hit two home runs in the same inning. Thomas led off the
sixth inning with a solo homer and later added a grand slam in the frame for
MCC.
Jake Smith picked up his first pitching win of the season
on the mound for the Eagles by tossing five scoreless innings. Smith allowed
two hits, no walks, and collected three strikeouts.
Former West Lauderdale star Daniel Hill drove in three
runs in the game and two of those came on a double in the sixth inning.
Freshman shortstop Jaylon Keys also added an RBI double in the Game One victory
and Goose Yates also chipped in with an RBI single.
Former Neshoba Central star Austin Harrison shined in
Game Two on the mound as MCC secured the sweep with a 2-1 victory. Harrison
pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowed four hits, no walks, and notched three
strikeouts. Freshman Colby Shaw earned the save out of the bullpen in the
one-run victory.
Thomas helped pace the offense in Game Two by collecting
an RBI on a sacrifice fly and Eason Weeks also secured an RBI base hit.
