MCC Sweeps Past Jones
From School Reports
The Meridian Community Lady Eagles entered play Thursday
night looking to exact some revenge against Jones County Junior College. The
Lady Eagles were defeated soundly on the road at Jones earlier in the season
and the story was much different Thursday night at the Graham Gymnasium. MCC
was able to hold off a late surge in the final minute of the game to take an
81-78 win over the visiting Lady Bobcats.
MCC improves to 16-3 overall for the season and 8-2 in MACJC
South Division play, while the Lady Bobcats fell to 12-7 and 6-4 in league
play. The Lady Eagles are now in first place in the MACJC South Division
standings after its victory over Jones. MCC, Southwest, and Pearl River entered
play tied for the top spot inside the division, but a major shakeup took place
in the standings after all of the dust settled Thursday night. Southwest lost
its third divisional game of the season as Co-Lin defeated the Lady Bears
60-52, while Pearl River defeated Mississippi Gulf Coast 71-63. The Lady
Eagles hold the current tie-breaker over Pearl River by defeating the Lady
Wildcats earlier in the season.
Miaya Crowder led the way in scoring for MCC with 24 points,
while Kristin Sampson poured in 21 points for the game. Former Neshoba Central
star Victoria Stewart finished with 18 points and Feleshia Walters added 10
points in the victory.
The MCC men were able to complete the sweep by pulling an
amazing 78-75 win over the Bobcats. Jones came into the game against Meridian
ranked 18th in the most recent NJCAA Men’s Division I National Poll.
Corey Brister led the way for the Eagles with 17 points and Phillip Walker had
13 points in the upset win.
Both MCC basketball teams will return to action this Monday
night with a road doubleheader at Co-Lin. The women are scheduled to take the
floor at 5:30 and the men at 7:30.
