Shleton State dominates Eagles for season sweep

(MERIDIAN) - The Shelton State Community College Bucs dominated the Meridian Community College Eagles Wednesday night, using a tenacious defense to win 69-48.

Although MCC got a game high 19 points from former NE Lauderdale standout- and Shelton State transfer- Tommy Tillman, it wasn't enough for the Eagles who lost the season series with Shelton State.

Tillman scored 15 of those points in the second half.

The Eagles trailed Shelton State 30-20 at half.

Mario Luckett and Otis Williams added nine points for Meridian, while 7-foot center, Brandon Baker had a game high eight blocked shots for the Eagles in an impressive individual defensive effort.

Edward Anderson led Shelton State with 12 points. T

he Eagles fell to 7-5 on the year and will play host to Bishop State Friday night at 8 p.m.

Shleton State uses second half to pull away from Lady Eagles

(MERIDIAN) For the second time this season the Shelton State Community College Lady Buds basketball team defeated the Meridian Community College Lady Eagles handily.

On Wednesday night, MCC fell to Shelton State 76-55- it was the second double digit loss to Shelton State on the year as the Lady Eagles fell 82-58 back on Nov. 13.

In the most recent loss, MCC was led by Tiara Parker, as the former Meridian High standout had 10 points. Maranda Anderson and Tiara Logan had eight points for the Lady Eagles.
Leading all scorers was Shelton State sophomore, Joi Walker, who scored 15 of her 16 total points in the second half.

The visiting Lady Bucs had a three point lead, 34-31 at half.

After the loss, MCC falls to 9-3 on the year and will be in action again on Friday when they host Bishop State at 6 pm.

Wednesday

Lady Eagles pick up sixth straight win

(MERIDIAN)- The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles basketball team won back-to-back ballgames on consecutive days with a victory Sunday afternoon against Horizon College out of Georgia.

Meridian won by a final score of 78-57, and by doing so, the Lady Eagles have now won six straight and improve their record to 9-2 on the season.

MCC's Tiara Parker had 22 points while LaQuita Burroughs had 15 points.

The Lady Eagles will be in action again Wednesday when they host Shelton State Community College at 6 p.m.

Lady Eagles defeat Alabama-Southern

(MONROEVILLE, Ala.) - The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles extended their current winning streak to five with an 81-75 victory Saturday at Alabama Southern Community College.

MCC is now 8-2 on the year and 5-1 on the road. Leading the way for the Lady Eagles Saturday night was Brittany Bohannon who had 24 points.

Tiara Logan, from Philadelphia, had 15 points while Tiara Parker, of Meridian, had 14 points.

The Lady Eagles play Sunday at 2:00 pm when they host Horizon College at MCC.

Eagle defeat Marion

(MARION, Ala.) - The Meridian Community College men's basketball team defeated Marion Military Institute on the road Saturday by a score of 86-71.

Sophomore, Mario Luckett, led the Eagles with a game high 28 points. The Vicksburg native also had 15 rebounds.

Otis Williams finished with 23 points while dishing out six assists.

Sophomore forward, Travis Thompson, had 13 points and eight rebounds, while former Bay Springs star, Patrick McCurtis scored 10 points for the Eagles.

Marion Military was led by Kyle Watkins with 18 points.

With the win, MCC improves to 7-4 and will be in action again on Wednesday at 8 pm when they host Shelton State.

MCC Golf announces All Academic Team

(MERIDIAN)- The Meridian Community College golf team has announced that two of its student-athletes were named to the MCC Golf All-Academic Team. All-Academic Team members must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale for the past semester.

Eagle head golf coach, Sean Covich confirmed Friday morning that the following MCC golfers have been named to the MCC Golf All-Academic Team:

John Cleveland and Cory Williamson.

The MCC Golf All-Academic Team members received a C.B. Hales Certificate for Academic Achievement among MCC Golfers and earned additional MCC Golfer of the Year Points.

Wednesday

SE Lauderdale soccer player inks with MCC


(MERIDIAN)- The Meridian Community College women's soccer team announced the signing of a local player to the Lady Eagles program Wednesday.

MCC head coach, Alex George, started off his 2009 recruiting class with a signee from Lauderdale County who looks to continue the success the program has enjoyed in the last two seasons. The Lady Eagles have won back-to-back championships and had an appearance in the 2008 NJCAA District championship.

Lainie Simcox is a 5'10" midfielder from Meridian who played at Southeast Lauderdale High School. She was named First Team All District and Best Offensive Player while in high school.

“I’m excited to add Lainie to our list of incoming freshmen for the 2009 class,” said George.

“She runs well and is strong over the ball. She is just the kind of player we needed to add to our core of returning sophomores.”

MCC basketball prepares for 'Bama road test


(MERIDIAN) – The Meridian Community College women’s basketball team aims to extend its winning streak to five games on Sunday when they travel to Alabama Southern for a 4 p.m. tip.

The Lady Eagles (7-2) are currently 4-1 on the road this year and their only road loss was Nov. 13, when then No. 14 Shelton State defeated MCC in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

As for Sunday, MCC faces an Alabama Southern that they are very familiar with.

The two teams met on Nov. 18, 2006, when the Lady Eagles claimed a 70-62 victory in the Graham Gymnasium.

After Sunday, MCC returns home to face Horizon at 2 p.m. on Sunday, before hosting nationally ranked, Shelton State on Wednesday, Dec 17 at 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, the MCC men’s basketball team looks to bounce back after a home loss to Albany Tech last Saturday.

The Eagles (6-4) will travel to Marion Military Institute in Marion, Ala. on Sunday for a 7 p.m. tip off.

MCC will be looking to avenge a 3-point home loss (73-76) to MMI back on Nov. 22.

Following their game Sunday, the eagles return home to face Shelton State on Wednesday, Dec. 17 for an 8 p.m. tip off.

Monday

Eagles drop home game to Albany Tech

(MERIDIAN) - The Meridian Community College men's basketball team had their three game winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon by visiting Albany Tech.

The Eagles fell to Albany Tech out of Georgia, 72-55.

For MCC, Travis Thompson led 14 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double.

Patrick McCurtis also pitched in with 10 points, Tommy Tillman added 11 points and Mario Luckett had 9 points.

With the setback, MCC falls to 6-4 and will travel to Marion Military Institute next Saturday.

Lady Eagles pick up fourth straight win

(HANCEVILLE, AL.) - The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles went on the road Saturday and picked up an eleven point victory against Wallace State-Hanceville, 66-55.

Former Meridian High standout, Tiara Parker, led the Lady Eagles with 24 points while LaQuita Burrough added 14 points.

Former Kemper County star, Britney Bohannon, had 12 rebounds while Jerrika Williams and former Philadelphia star, Natonya McWilliams, both had 11 rebounds.

With the win, MCC has now won four straight games and improves their record to 7-2 and will travel to Alabama Southern next Saturday.

MCC men extend winning streak


(SELMA, Ala.) – The Meridian Community College men’s basketball team has now won three straight games after an 81-79 victory Wednesday night on the road against Wallace-Selma.

The two point win completed a season sweep of the Patriots for MCC as the Eagles won 102-100 back in November against Wallace-Selma.

On Wednesday night, Mario Luckett led MCC with 24 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double. Former Bay Springs star, Patrick McCurtis, added 20 points for the Eagles.

MCC was down 40-38 at halftime to Wallace-Selma but outscored the Patriots 43-39 in the final half of play to earn the victory.

With the win, MCC improves to 6-3 on the season and will now get ready to host Albany Tech on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Monday

MCC men look for three straight, Lady Eagles on the road Saturday

(MERIDIAN)- After blowing out two opponents by 20-plus points on back-to-back nights last week, the Meridian Community College men’s basketball team (5-3) looks to continue their winning streak at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday when they face Wallace-Selma in Selma, Ala.

The two teams met back on November 15th when the home-standing Eagles survived a double overtime game with visiting Wallace-Selma, 102-100.

Against the Patriots, MCC’s Tommy Tillman scored 24 points while Mario Luckett scored 20 points. Chris Walker led Selma with 41 points, while Michael Acoff added 36 points for the Patriots.

After Wednesday’s contest at Selma, the Eagles will return home to entertain Albany Technical College Saturday, December 6th at the Graham Gymnasium. That game is slated for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.

Meanwhile, on that same day (Dec. 6) the MCC Lady Eagles will travel to Hanceville, Ala. to face Wallace State-Hanceville at 2:00 p.m. The Lady Eagles are 6-2 on the year and are coming off a 10 point road win at Bishop State last Monday night.
