MCC tied for 2nd –Ivy leads medalist race at Belhaven Invitational

MADISON, Miss. –The Meridian Community College golf squad concluded the first round of action at the Belhaven College Fall Invitational Monday in a tie for 2nd place with host school Belhaven. The team shot a 302 and was led by freshman Joshua Ivy, who fired a one-under par 71, Ivy is in first place among the 40 collegiate golfers. Four other golfers are tied at 74 (+2)- including MCC’s Jarrod Lemaster.

"It was a windy day," said MCC's head golf coach, Sean Covich.

"I was really proud of all our guys- especially Joshua Ivy- this was the 1st time he's ever seen the course, and he shoots under par."

MCC is the only junior college team in the seven team field. Union (TN) University, Mississippi College, Belhaven College, and Tougaloo College are among some of the schools competing.

MCC sophomores Dustin Petit and Justin Eaves fired 76 and 77 respectively. Eagle freshman Bryant Self shot 78 while sophomore Zach Rushing shot a 79.

MCC’s B-team is also in action at the Belhaven Tournament. Eagle freshmen Jarrod Lemaster and Michael Burton led the way for the B-team by firing 74 and 78 respectively. Sophomores Reid Kennedy shot 84 and Cole Clopton shot 82. Freshman Curt Sparks shot 85. The MCC B-team shot 318 and stands in 4th place.

Ryan Hill is competing as an individual for the Eagles, Hill shot 91.

Union University out of Tennessee leads the field after shooting a 301 and leads MCC and host-Belhaven by just one stroke.

The second and final round of Belhaven Fall Invitational will begin Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. with a shotgun start. Play is being held at Caroline Golf Club in Madison, MS.
