ST. LOUIS - Following a third-place finish at the Rex Chaney Eagle Classic this week, good things keep happening for Southern Illinois University men's golfer Matt Ellis as he was named Missouri Valley Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
The junior from Madison, Miss. fired a tournament-total 72-71-70--213 to finish 3-under-par at the Rex Chaney Eagle Classic this week, coming in third place overall.
Ellis, who transferred to SIU this season from Meridian Community College, led the Salukis to a runner-up finish at the two-day tournament. The Salukis finished three strokes behind host Morehead State and was the only team to challenge for the lead as SIU had a 18-stroke cushion over its nearest competitor (Cleveland State).
The 3-under 213 is a personal best for Ellis, as is his third-place finish. He previous best finish at SIU was 31st at the Murray State Invitational.
The Salukis will take the week off following the Eagle Classic and return to action Oct. 23-24 at the Oral Roberts Invitational.
