FT GAINES, Ga. – The Meridian College golf team posted a final round 6-over par 294 to maintain it’s 18-hole fourth-place standing in the Andrew College Fall Invitational on Monday. MCC concluded the tournament at the 7,004 yard par 72 Meadow links Golf Course in Fort Gaines, Georgia at 13-over par. The top-5 five-finish by the Eagles is the third-straight to open the 2006 fall slate. MCC has finished 4th in the Mississippi College Invitational, 1st in the MCC/Rush Invitational and now 4th in the Andrew College Invitational.

11 teams competed in the Andrew College event, including two time defending NJCAA Div. II national champions, Darton College, four year schools- Georgia Southwestern State University and Paine College. Meridian was the only school in the field representing the Magnolia State.

MCC was led by freshman Bryant Self. Self carded a 3-under par round of 69 on Sunday and then a 3-over par 75 on Monday. Self finished the 36-hole event at even par (144) The Belden, Miss. native led all MCC golfers with a t-6th-place finish.

Eagle sophomore Justin Eaves rebounded from a first round score of 77 to fire an even-par 72 in the final round to finish the event at 149 (+5).

Luling, La. native Dustin Petit tallied a 1-over par 73 on Monday for the Eagles. The MCC sophomore shot a 3-over par 75 on day one. Petit finished with a two day total of 148 (+4).

Eagle freshman Joshua Ivy played steady both rounds shooting 74 each day. The Quitman, Miss. native shot a two day total of 148 (+4).

Curt Sparks, a freshman from Belmont, Miss. rounded out the scoring for MCC’s five man team, with a two day total of 163 (82-81).

“We played well, but we threw away some shots on the final four holes each day,” said MCC head coach Sean Covich. “But we were within a few shots of the #1 program in the country (Darton)- that is very encouraging.”

Darton (GA) College’s “Red” team held on to its 18-hole clubhouse lead to win the 36-hole event at 578 (284-294). Georgia Southwestern State University finished runner up at 583 (297-286) while Darton’s “Grey” team placed third at 585 (305-280). MCC finished 4th at 589 (295-294).

The Green and White will turn its attention to the Belhaven College Invitational against on Oct. 30-31, at Lake Caroline Golf Club in Madison, Miss.

“We will take Thursday and Friday off for fall break. But practice and qualifying will pick back up next week to prepare for the final events of the fall,” added Covich.
