MCC Golf Captures Tournament Title

The Meridian Community College golf team captured the MACJC Event #4 on Tuesday afternoon at the Grand Bear Golf Club in Saucier, MS by finishing three strokes ahead of Spring Hill College. MCC finished the two-day tournament with a final team score of 589 (13-over par), while Spring Hill fired a final team score of 593 (17-over par). Former Lamar star Lance Strickland led the way for the Eagles by finishing in a tie for second place with a two-day score of 144 after shooting a second round score of 75.

Isaiah Jackson also had a solid tournament for the Eagles by firing a final round score of 72 to finish in a tie for ninth, while Jacob Berry finished 13th overall after shooting a 79 to finish the second round. Malachi Spiers finished in 14th position with a second round score of 75 and Porshe Kitipongpatana in 53rd position with a final round score of 77. Brady Stevens played as an individual for the Eagles and placed in a tied for 68th with a final round score of 83.

The tournament victory for the Eagles also concluded the fall potion of the schedule for the Meridian Community College golf team. MCC will carry a top ten ranking into the 2017 spring season according to the latest release of the 2017 Golfstat.com spring ranking among all Division II golf teams in the nation.

MCC Soccer Sweeps Past Northwest

The Meridian Community College soccer squads returned to action on Friday afternoon with a pair of non-conference games against Northwest Mississippi Community College at C.D. Smith Field. MCC enjoyed a ton of success on Friday by sweeping past Northwest by final scores of 7-1 (women) and 2-0 (men).

The MCC women improved to 4-6 overall, while the MCC men moved its overall record to 8-3 for the season. MCC will return to conference action on Tuesday at home against Co-Lin Community College. The Lady Eagles will take to the field at 5 p.m. and the men will follow at 7 p.m.

The Lady Eagles got the day started off on the right note by blowing past the Lady Rangers by a final count of 7-1. MCC held a slim 2-1 lead at the end of the first half, but the home team would cruise to the victory with five goals in the second half.

Kee Cole scored a pair of goals in the second half, while Effie Morrison added a goal in the period. Morrison also scored a goal in the first half for the Lady Eagles, while Kylee Burke added a goal in the first half off of a penalty kick. Alandria Smith and Gabby Joyce also joined the big offensive game for the Lady Eagles with a one goal apiece in the second half.

The MCC men used a pair of goals in the opening 15 minutes of action on Friday to secure a 2-0 victory over the Rangers. Elijah Wheat scored the first goal of the game for MCC in the 12th minutes on an assist by Pedro Dutra, while Thallison Alex added the final goal of the match for the Eagles in the 15th minute of play.
